What are Stainless Steel 409 Coils?

Stainless Steel 409 coils are flat-rolled ferritic stainless steel carrying 10.50 to 11.70% chromium with a titanium addition that binds carbon and nitrogen. Welded seams hold their corrosion resistance without post-weld annealing. These stainless steel coils contain very little nickel, making them more economical than austenitic stainless steel coils, and they stay magnetic in every condition. Stainless Steel 409 coils are typically used in automotive exhaust systems, mufflers, catalytic converter housings, and agricultural machinery components.

As a reliable stainless steel 409 coils supplier, we keep these coils as ready stock, sourced from reputed primary mills and slit in-house to any width up to 2000 mm. Material ships in the annealed soft condition per ASTM A240, as HR (hot rolled) pickled or CR (cold rolled) supply.

Chemical Composition of SS 409 Coils

Titanium separates Grade 409 from plain chromium steels. It ties up carbon and nitrogen as carbonitrides, leaving chromium free to guard the surface. ASTM A240 limits for S40910 follow.

Element Composition (% by weight)
Carbon (C) 0.030 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.040 max
Sulphur (S) 0.020 max
Silicon (Si) 1.00 max
Chromium (Cr) 10.50 to 11.70
Nickel (Ni) 0.50 max
Titanium (Ti) 6x(C+N) min to 0.50 max
Niobium (Nb) 0.17 max
Nitrogen (N) 0.030 max
Iron (Fe) Balance

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 409 Coils

Annealed 409 SS Coils pair a 380 MPa minimum tensile strength with 20% elongation, so blanks draw and roll-form cleanly. Coils ship soft only; the grade carries no temper ladder.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
380 MPa (55 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
170 MPa (25 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
20%
Hardness, maximum
88 HRB

Equivalent Grades of SS 409 Coils

Buyers ordering UNS S40900 coils, EN 1.4512 material, or SUS409 stock under a regional code can match designations in the table below.

Country / Standard Designation

Europe (EN) X2CrTi12
Germany (W.Nr) 1.4512
Japan (JIS) SUH409 / SUS409L
China (GB) 022Cr11Ti

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 409 Coils

These 4 industries utilise most of the AISI 409 coils in our stock. Each values oxidation resistance at a fraction of the cost of austenitic grades.

Stainless Steel 409 Coils used in Automotive Exhaust Systems

Automotive Exhaust Systems

Exhaust plants roll-form 409 coil stock into catalytic converter shells, muffler bodies, and tailpipes. The grade runs at continuous exhaust temperatures around 675 °C and tolerates intermittent spikes towards 815 °C. Titanium stabilisation keeps seam welds ductile, so production lines skip post-weld annealing.

Stainless Steel 409 Coils used in Heat Exchangers and Furnace Equipment

Heat Exchangers and Furnace Equipment

Thermal equipment builders press Type 409 coil into exchanger panels, burner housings, and flue components. Its ferritic structure has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than austenitic stainless steels, reducing distortion during repeated heating cycles.

Stainless Steel 409 Coils used in Agricultural and Grain Handling Equipment

Agricultural and Grain Handling Equipment

Farm machinery makers form 409 SS coil into grain dryers, silo panels, hoppers, and sprayer bodies. Rural atmospheres corrode carbon steel more rapidly; a chromium oxide surface lasts for years at little extra cost. The 20% minimum elongation leaves room for deep pressing.

Stainless Steel 409 Coils used in Chimneys, Appliances and General Fabrication

Chimneys, Appliances and General Fabrication

Fabrication shops slit 409 stainless coils into chimney liners, stove components, and welded structural tubes. The material joins without hardening trouble and accepts paint or aluminising well. Where chloride exposure stays mild, it replaces costlier grades with no service penalty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness and width range is available for SS 409 Coils?

We supply SS 409 Coils in thicknesses from 0.03 mm to 5 mm and widths up to 2000 mm, with coil ID from 150 mm to 610 mm and OD up to 1800 mm. Custom widths are slit in-house at ±0.1 mm.

What is the difference between SS 409 and SS 410 Coils?

The difference between SS 409 and SS 410 Coils lies in microstructure and heat-treat response. Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilised ferritic steel made for welded exhaust work, while 410 is martensitic and hardens by quenching and tempering.

Why are 409 Stainless Coils used in automotive exhausts?

409 stainless coils are used in automotive exhausts because they resist hot exhaust gas at around 675 °C continuous service for a fraction of the austenitic cost. Welded seams stay ductile thanks to titanium stabilisation.

Do you provide mill test certificates for SS 409 Coils?

Yes, we provide mill test certificates for SS 409 Coils on request. EN 10204 Type 3.1 / 3.2 documents are issued with every order on request.

What is the price of SS 409 Coils per kg?
