What are Stainless Steel 430 Shims?

Stainless Steel 430 shims are thin ferritic spacers slit from 16 to 18% chromium stainless, a grade carrying almost no nickel. Heat treatment will not harden them, so they ship annealed and soft. The alloy stays magnetic in every condition. Chromium raises a passive oxide film that resists mild atmospheres, hot water, and nitric acid, at a cost below austenitic 304. Fitters slide these stainless steel shims between mating faces to correct alignment and set bearing clearances. Stainless Steel 430 shims find typical use in domestic appliances, automotive trim pieces, commercial food display cases, and industrial mixing equipment.

As a reliable Stainless Steel 430 Shim supplier and manufacturer, we design each 430 shim in-house on our own slitting lines. Material leaves annealed to ASTM A240 in any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm, with a choice of 2B, BA, and Matte surface and slit, deburred, or round edges. A documented quality system governs each stage from source coil to dispatch, and every shipment carries EN 10204 Type 3.1 / 3.2 documentation on request.

Specifications of Stainless Steel 430 Shims

We provide ASTM A240 Type 430 shim stock in the annealed condition, across three surface finishes and three edge options, slit from ready stock to the dimensions below.

Parameter Details
Standard ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240
Thickness 0.03 mm to 5 mm
Width 3 mm to 2000 mm
Width Tolerance ±0.1 mm
Condition Annealed (Soft)
Surface Finish 2B, BA (Bright Annealed), Matte
Edge Slit edge, Deburred edge, Round edge

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 430 Shims

Chromium defines Grade 430. At 16 to 18%, it builds the passive oxide film behind the shim's corrosion resistance, with no deliberate nickel addition. The ASTM A240 limits follow.

Element Composition (% by weight)
Carbon (C) 0.12 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Silicon (Si) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.040 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Chromium (Cr) 16.00 to 18.00
Iron (Fe) Balance
Nickel (Ne) 0.75 max

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 430 Shims

Formability matters more than strength in shim work. Annealed 430 reaches a 450 MPa minimum tensile strength with 22% elongation, so shim blanks die-slit cleanly and take corrective bends without cracking. The grade is not hardenable by heat treatment, so shims carry no temper ladder.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
450 MPa (65 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
22%
Hardness, maximum
89 HRB (183 HBW)

Equivalent Grades of Stainless Steel 430 Shims

Buyers ordering UNS S43000 shim, EN 1.4016, or SUS 430 stock under a local code can match designations in the table below. Our 430 shims meet each one.

Country / Standard Designation
USA (UNS) S43000
Europe (EN) X6Cr17
Germany (W.Nr) 1.4016
Japan (JIS) SUS430
China (GB) 10Cr17
UK (BS) 430S17
Russia (GOST) 12Х17

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 430 Shims

These 4 industries widely use 430 stainless steel shims we slit. Each buyer selects the grade for corrosion resistance, magnetic response, or low cost against austenitic shim stock.

Stainless Steel 430 Shims used in Automotive Components

Automotive Components

Vehicle assemblers fit 430 SS shims behind trim panels, sensor brackets, and exhaust mounts to set clearances on the line. The ferritic structure stays magnetic for fixture location, and chromium above 16% resists road-salt oxidation on cosmetic parts.

Stainless Steel 430 Shims used in Food Processing Equipment

Food Processing Equipment

Food and dairy fabricators use Grade 430 shims to align shafts, seal faces, and conveyor frames. The passive chromium film keeps the surface non-tainting through hot alkaline wash cycles. Where chloride exposure stays low, 430 handles daily contact without the nickel cost of austenitic grades.

Stainless Steel 430 Shims used in Appliance and Household Manufacturing

Appliance and Household Manufacturing

Appliance plants shim motor mounts, hinge assemblies, and panel gaps in washing machines, ovens, and refrigerators. Grade 430 is the most widely used ferritic stainless in domestic goods because it takes a clean bright finish and stays magnetic for induction and sensor fixings.

Stainless Steel 430 Shims used in General Engineering and Machinery

General Engineering and Machinery

General engineering shops rely on 430 shim stock for bearing spacing, gib adjustment, and wear compensation in machine tools. Precision slitting to ±0.1 mm keeps alignment calculations accurate through assembly. One caution applies: prolonged service between 400 and 550 °C causes 475 °C embrittlement through alpha-prime phase formation, so fitters keep 430 shims below that band.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness range is available for Stainless Steel 430 Shims?

We slit Stainless Steel 430 shims from 0.03 mm to 5 mm thick and to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm, held to ±0.1 mm tolerance in width. Anything thinner than 0.03 mm falls under our SS 430 foils range.

Are Stainless Steel 430 Shims magnetic?

Yes. Grade 430 is a ferritic stainless steel, so the shims respond to a magnet in every condition, including after cold rolling and forming. That property makes them suitable for fixture location and sensor mounting.

What surface finishes are available for SS 430 Shims?

We supply SS 430 shims in 2B, BA (Bright Annealed), and Matte finishes. Choice depends on whether you need a bright face, a dull surface for coating, or a protected finish for handling.

Can Stainless Steel 430 Shims be supplied in coil form?

Yes. We wind 430 shim stock into coils with inner diameters from 150 mm to 610 mm and outer diameters up to 1800 mm, and we also supply flat, precision-slit lengths to your drawing.

Where can I source Stainless Steel 430 Shims in India?

You can source Stainless Steel 430 shims from us at Riddhi Siddhi Impex. Our Mumbai and Taloja warehouses hold ferritic shim stock ready for dispatch, and we serve buyers across India and overseas as a manufacturer, supplier, and exporter. Phone or WhatsApp us; quotes will be provided within 24 hours.
