What are Stainless Steel 304 Strips?

Stainless Steel 304 strips are narrow, flat-rolled lengths of the most widely used austenitic chromium-nickel grade, holding 17.5 to 19.5% chromium and 8.0 to 10.5% nickel, the classic 18/8 stainless. The grade resists atmospheric, food, and mild chemical damage, forms and welds readily, and work hardens under cold rolling, so strength rises with every temper step. Temper Conditions of Stainless Steel 304 Strips

Temper is the hardness level a strip carries after cold rolling, set by how much thickness reduction follows the last anneal. We supply Type 304 strip in six conditions, from Soft (Annealed) through to Full Hard. ASTM A666 defines and tabulates properties for Type 304 only up to Half Hard, so those three conditions carry standard-referenced figures on the certificate. Three-Quarter Hard, Hard, and Full Hard are mill tempers for this grade, rolled to tensile ranges agreed at order stage and recorded on the EN 10204 mill test certificate. Press behaviour changes sharply across that ladder, so the temper choice matters as much as the gauge on most stamping jobs.

Soft (Annealed) Stainless Steel 304 Strips

Annealed strip is the fully softened condition, tested at 515 MPa minimum tensile and 205 MPa minimum yield with 40% elongation to ASTM A666. Deep drawing, tight bending, and multi-hit progressive work all start here, since the material takes reduction without splitting. Sink trim, utensil blanks, wash-down fittings, and drawn shells are the usual destinations. Buyers slitting soft 304 to narrow widths should expect a little coil set and camber, which is why we interleave paper on soft narrow coils and keep the tension light through the line.

Quarter Hard (1/4H) Stainless Steel 304 Strips

This is the temper we quote most often when a shop wants a part that holds its shape but still needs one or two bends. ASTM A666 sets Quarter Hard Type 304 at 860 MPa minimum tensile and 515 MPa minimum yield with 10% minimum elongation. Springback is noticeable compared with annealed stock, so tooling usually needs an allowance built in on the first trial. Hose clamps, wiper components, light brackets, and connector shells run well in this condition.

Half Hard (1/2H) Stainless Steel 304 Strips

Half Hard is the last Type 304 condition ASTM A666 tabulates, at 1035 MPa minimum tensile, 760 MPa minimum yield, and 6% minimum elongation. Forming is limited to gentle radii and simple profiles at this point; sharp bends across the rolling direction tend to crack. Battery tabs, shielding cans, clamping bands, and formed clips are typical uses. Slit edges come off harder here, so deburred or round edge is worth specifying if the strip feeds automated tooling.

Three-Quarter Hard (3/4H) Stainless Steel 304 Strips

Three-Quarter Hard sits beyond what ASTM A666 covers for Type 304, so we roll it as a mill temper to tensile ranges agreed at order stage, typically towards 175 ksi. Elongation drops low enough that forming is effectively restricted to flat parts and very light radii. Shims, gaskets, and stamped flat blanks are the realistic applications. If a design needs Three-Quarter Hard strength together with a guaranteed elongation minimum on the certificate, grade 301 is the correct call, since A666 tabulates that condition for 301.

Hard Stainless Steel 304 Strips

Hard temper 304 solves the complaint we hear most often about softer strip, which is blanked parts that will not stay flat under load. Strength runs typically towards 180 ksi, recorded as a mill temper against the tensile range agreed at order stage. The certificate reports tensile and Rockwell figures from the actual coil rather than a standard table, and buyers should treat those as the reference for incoming inspection. Springs, spring clips, and load-bearing wall ties take this condition.

Full Hard Stainless Steel 304 Strips

Full Hard is the maximum cold-rolled condition we roll in Type 304, typically towards 185 ksi tensile, again as a mill temper with the range set at order stage. Bending is not practical beyond a shallow flatten, and the strip is close to non-magnetic only in name, since heavy cold work transforms enough austenite to give a clear magnetic response. Flat springs, blade stock, and thin structural shims are where it earns its place. Order-desk note: at the harder end of the ladder we hold width tighter on the slitting line, because narrow Full Hard strip is far less forgiving of camber than annealed stock.
