What are Hastelloy C276 Foils?

Hastelloy C276 foils are thin, cold-rolled sheets of a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with tungsten. Molybdenum at 15 to 17% and chromium at 14.5 to 16.5% give the grade its resistance to pitting and reducing acids, while the 0.01% carbon ceiling limits carbide precipitation during welding. Thin-gauge C-276 foil serves as diaphragm, burst disc, and gasket stock where aggressive chemistry meets tight sections.

Temper Conditions of Hastelloy C276 Foils

Temper describes how much cold work a foil carries after rolling, which sets its strength and how it behaves under a press. We stock Hastelloy C276 foil in six conditions, from soft annealed through to full hard. Only the soft annealed condition is covered by ASTM B575, which fixes its minimum tensile strength, yield, and elongation along with the alloy's certified corrosion resistance. The five harder conditions are mill tempers, cold rolled to tensile ranges agreed at the order stage and recorded on the mill test certificate. Because C276 gains hardness only through cold work and not through ageing, each step up the ladder trades formability for strength.

Soft (Annealed) Hastelloy C276 Foil

The soft annealed condition is the one we certify to ASTM B575, with a minimum tensile strength of 690 MPa, a yield of 283 MPa, and around 40% elongation, indicative at foil gauge. Hardness sits at 90 HRB maximum. This is also the only condition for which the alloy's published corrosion resistance holds, so any part that must survive hydrochloric or sulphuric acid service should be formed from annealed stock. It deep draws, spins, and bends without cracking, which suits diaphragms, bellows, and burst discs shaped before they go into service. The certificate records tensile, yield, and elongation for annealed foil rather than a hardness reading alone.

Quarter Hard (1/4H) Hastelloy C276 Foil

Quarter hard is the temper we quote when a stamping shop wants more stiffness than annealed foil gives but still needs to form the part without splitting. Light cold reduction lifts tensile strength towards 830 to 1000 MPa, with hardness in the 96 HRB to 20 HRC band. At this gauge we confirm the temper by tensile test or microhardness on the certificate, since thin foil cannot take a direct Rockwell C reading. It holds a cleaner edge through blanking than soft foil and keeps enough ductility for shallow forms. This is a mill temper, so we roll it to the tensile range agreed at order rather than to a standard table.

Half Hard (1/2H) Hastelloy C276 Foil

Flat springs, contact blades, and clamping shims that must hold their shape under load are the parts half hard foil goes into most often. Cold work raises tensile strength towards 1000 to 1170 MPa, with hardness across the 20 to 28 HRC range. The trade is formability: bends want a generous radius, and tight folds will crack. We interleave narrow half hard coils with paper on the recoil to stop the harder surface marking itself. Strength here is a mill-rolled figure agreed at order and recorded on the MTC, not a B575 minimum.

Three-Quarter Hard (3/4H) Hastelloy C276 Foil

On our slitting lines three-quarter hard foil throws a smaller burr than the softer tempers and recovers more springback once it leaves the arbor, so we set knife clearance tighter to hold the ±0.1 mm width. Tensile strength runs towards 1170 to 1310 MPa, with hardness in the 28 to 34 HRC band. Parts that carry sustained spring load without much forming, such as retainers and load washers, sit well at this temper. Camber shows up faster at narrow widths here than in annealed stock, so we check straightness off the line. We record the rolled tensile range on the certificate for each coil.

Hard Hastelloy C276 Foil

Hard temper solves the complaint we hear most about softer foil in spring service: parts that relax and lose their set under repeated load. Cold rolling takes tensile strength towards 1310 to 1450 MPa, with hardness in the 34 to 40 HRC range. Forming is limited to gentle curvature at this level, so parts are usually blanked flat and used flat. It is a mill temper rolled to an agreed tensile range and confirmed by tensile or microhardness on the MTC. The corrosion figures published for C276 apply to the annealed condition, so we do not carry them over to hard foil.

Full Hard Hastelloy C276 Foil

Full hard is the wrong choice for any part that still needs to be formed, since at tensile strength towards 1450 to 1655 MPa and hardness of 40 to 45 HRC the foil takes almost no bend without fracturing. We supply it for flat springs and thin blades that are blanked to final shape and stay flat in service. If a design needs both this strength level and guaranteed elongation to a published standard, C276 foil is not the right material and a precipitation-hardening or spring-grade alloy is the correct call. Like every cold-worked condition here, its strength is rolled to order and recorded on the mill test certificate, and it does not carry the corrosion certification of annealed C276. We confirm the temper by tensile test or microhardness rather than a direct Rockwell C reading.
