What are Stainless Steel 310S Sheets & Plates?

Stainless Steel 310S sheets and plates are high-chromium, high-nickel austenitic products engineered for sustained high-temperature service up to 1150°C. With 24-26% chromium and 19-22% nickel, it grows a stable oxide scale that resists scaling in air to about 1050 °C. The low 0.08% maximum carbon separates 310S from plain 310, cutting carbide precipitation during welding. It also stays tough at cryogenic temperatures, widening use beyond furnaces. These sheets and plates typically used for high-temperature furnace parts, heat exchangers, and cryogenic components.

We stock these 310S stainless steel sheets and plates as part of our Stainless Steel Sheets & Plates range, held to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 from 3.8 mm cold-rolled sheet through hot-rolled plate, in widths to 2000 mm. Both forms sit annealed with No.1 and 2B finishes at our Mumbai and Taloja warehouses. Each dispatch carries EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificates on request.

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 310S

Chromium at 24-26% drives the oxidation resistance of this grade, forming the protective scale that lets 310S run near 1050 °C. Nickel at 19-22% keeps the austenite stable. Full ASTM A240 limits appear below.

Element Composition (%)
Carbon (C) 0.08 max
Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.045 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Silicon (Si) 1.50 max
Chromium (Cr) 24.0-26.0
Nickel (Ni) 19.0-22.0
Iron (Fe) Balance

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 310S

Tensile strength governs how 310S sheet and plate behave under load. The grade holds a 515 MPa minimum tensile strength and 205 MPa minimum yield, with 40% elongation for cold forming. Values follow ASTM A240 for annealed flat products.

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 310S Sheets & Plates

These 4 industries widely utilise the 310S stainless steel plate and sheet we supply, each picking the grade for oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength.

Stainless Steel 310S Sheets & Plates used in Furnace and Heat Treatment Components

Furnace and Heat Treatment Components

Heat treaters line furnace muffles, retorts, radiant tubes, and annealing boxes with 310S plate. The 25% chromium builds a tenacious oxide that stays adherent through repeated cycling to about 1035 °C. Nickel near 20% stabilises the austenitic structure at elevated temperatures.

Stainless Steel 310S Sheets & Plates used in Petrochemical and Chemical Processing

Petrochemical and Chemical Processing

Refineries install 310S sheet into thermowells, catalyst supports, and sulphur-recovery equipment. The grade resists oxidising atmospheres and outperforms most heat-resistant stainless steels in reducing and carburising conditions. 310S handles sulphur-bearing gases, but the temperature limit drops: roughly 950 °C where sulphur exceeds 2 g/m³, and about 1000 °C in low-oxygen atmospheres.

Stainless Steel 310S Sheets & Plates used in Power Generation & Boiler Components

Power Generation & Boiler Components

The 310S plate is used in ash handling sections, duct linings, and superheater supports in coal and biomass boilers. 310S holds its shape well under load, but for sustained mechanical load above roughly 980 °C, 310H (S31009) is the better choice because its controlled 0.04-0.10% carbon gives higher creep strength. We can supply either grade; ask us if your parts carry load at temperature.

Stainless Steel 310S Sheets & Plates used in Food Processing Equipment

Food Processing Equipment

Bakery ovens, roasting lines, and sterilising units use 310S sheet where hot, humid conditions corrode lesser grades. The smooth stainless steel surface is easy to clean and suitable for food-contact equipment. Its chromium-nickel matrix resists scaling on trays, conveyors, and oven panels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SS 310 and SS 310S Sheets and Plates?

The main difference between SS 310 and SS 310S is carbon content. SS 310S caps carbon at 0.08% against 0.25% for SS 310, which lowers carbide precipitation during welding and keeps corrosion resistance intact through the heat-affected zone.

What is the maximum continuous service temperature for 310S Plates?

SS 310S plates hold up in continuous service to about 1050 °C in air. The 24-26% chromium and 19-22% nickel form a stable oxide scale that resists spalling. Intermittent cycling service is rated slightly lower.

Can SS 310S Sheets and Plates be welded?

Yes, SS 310S sheets and plates may be easily welded by TIG, MIG, and manual arc procedures. ER310 or E310 is the preferred filler. Post-weld heat treatment is usually not needed due to the low carbon concentration, which prevents carbide precipitation.

Do you supply SS 310S Sheets and Plates with mill test certificates?

All consignments of SS 310S sheets and plates are accompanied by EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certifications on request. Complete traceability on demand in the form of test data sheets and material property paperwork.

Where can I buy SS 310S Plates in India?
