What is Alloy 20 Strip?

Alloy 20 strips are thin, cold-rolled flat products of an austenitic nickel-iron-chromium alloy with added copper and molybdenum, stabilised by niobium. The copper and molybdenum resist reducing acids, especially sulphuric acid, while chromium adds oxidising resistance. Niobium at a minimum of eight times the carbon content locks up carbon, so welded parts resist intergranular corrosion. UNS N08020 also resists chloride stress corrosion cracking. It serves chemical processing, heat exchangers, and oil and gas duties.

We slit every Alloy 20 coil in-house, from 0.03 mm to 5 mm thick and any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm. Material under 4.76 mm thick and under 610 mm wide is classified as strip; wider widths ship as sheet or coil, and 4.76 mm and above as plate. Material leaves our facility in the stabilised annealed condition to ASME SB-463, with a choice of BA, 2B, Matte, HR pickled, or cold-rolled finishes and slit, deburred, or round edges. A mill test certificate ships with every order.

Chemical Composition of Alloy 20 Strips

Copper sets this grade apart. UNS N08020 strip carries 3.0 to 4.0% copper with 2.0 to 3.0% molybdenum, and together they resist sulphuric acid across a wide range of concentrations. The full composition per ASTM A240 / ASME SB-463 appears below.

Element Composition (%)
Nickel (Ni) 32.0 to 38.0
Chromium (Cr) 19.0 to 21.0

Industrial Applications of Alloy 20 Strips

These are the applications that specify most of the Nickel Alloy 20 strips we slit. Buyers select the grade for its sulphuric acid resistance, ability to withstand chloride stress corrosion cracking, and stabilised welds.

Alloy 20 Strips used in Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Chemical plants use Alloy 20 slit coil for gaskets, bellows, and heat exchanger parts exposed to sulphuric and phosphoric acids. The copper and molybdenum hold up in reducing acids that corrode stainless steel, and niobium keeps welded seams free of intergranular damage.

Alloy 20 Strips used in Pharmaceutical and Food Processing

Pharmaceutical and Food Processing

Pharmaceutical fabricators form Alloy 20 strips into mixing components and heat exchanger parts that contact acidic intermediates and cleaning agents. The stabilised austenitic structure holds its corrosion resistance through repeated clean-in-place cycles, so process fluids stay uncontaminated.

Alloy 20 Strips used in Heat Exchangers and Process Vessels

Heat Exchangers and Process Vessels

Fabricators use Alloy 20 winding strips in heat exchanger tubesheets, linings, and vessel parts handling hot acidic media. Resistance to both reducing and oxidising conditions lets one material serve duties that would otherwise need two.

Alloy 20 Strips used in Oil and Gas Processing

Oil and Gas Processing

Refinery operators specify UNS N08020 strips for acid-service sealing parts and separator components. The high nickel base resists chloride stress corrosion cracking, while copper counters the reducing acids formed in refining.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ASTM standard covers Alloy 20 Strips?

Alloy 20 strips are covered by ASTM A240 and ASME SB-463 (formerly ASTM B463) for UNS N08020 plate, sheet, and strip, with ASTM A480 for general flat-rolled requirements.

What is the chemical composition of Alloy 20 Strips?

Alloy 20 strips carry 32.0 to 38.0% nickel, 19.0 to 21.0% chromium, 3.0 to 4.0% copper, and 2.0 to 3.0% molybdenum, with iron as the balance, per ASTM A240 / ASME SB-463. Niobium is added at a minimum of eight times the carbon content to stabilise the alloy.

What thickness and width ranges are available for Alloy 20 Strips?

We slit Alloy 20 strips from 0.03 mm to 5 mm thick and to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm, held to ±0.1 mm on narrow slit widths.
