What are Stainless Steel 321 Foils?

Stainless Steel 321 foils are ultra-thin, titanium-stabilised austenitic strips, cold rolled to gauges as fine as 0.03 mm and carrying 17 to 19% chromium with 9 to 12% nickel. Titanium added at five times the combined carbon and nitrogen locks carbon into stable carbide, which keeps chromium in solution and blocks intergranular corrosion through the 425 to 815 °C sensitisation band. This stainless steel foil holds oxidation resistance approaching 900 °C, so it wraps heat-treated parts where plain Type 304 would sensitise.

As a trusted Stainless Steel 321 Foil supplier and manufacturer, we slit every foil in-house on our own mills and slitting lines rather than melting the alloy. Stock leaves annealed soft in any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm, held to ±0.1 mm. Buyers choose BA, 2B, matte PVC, or matte surfaces with slit or deburred edges, and test papers travel with each order on request.

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 321 Foils

Titanium defines this grade. Added at five times the combined carbon and nitrogen, it forms stable carbides and frees chromium to guard the surface, as the ASTM A240 limits below confirm.

Element Composition (% by weight)
Carbon (C) 0.08 max
Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.045 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Silicon (Si) 0.75 max
Chromium (Cr) 17.00 to 19.00
Nickel (Ni) 9.00 to 12.00
Titanium (Ti) 5x(C+N) min, 0.70 max
Nitrogen (N) 0.10 max
Iron (Fe) Balance

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 321 Foils

Annealed SS 321 foil stretches 40% minimum, so it wraps and folds without cracking. Foils ship soft only; below the standard's thin-gauge threshold near 0.38 mm, treat the figures as indicative.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
515 MPa (75 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
40%
Hardness, maximum
217 HBW / 95 HRB

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 321 Foils

These 4 industries use most of the 321 Ti-stabilised foil we slit, each choosing the grade for weld stability and oxidation resistance under sustained heat.

Stainless Steel 321 Foils used in Heat Treatment and Furnace Wrapping

Heat Treatment and Furnace Wrapping

Heat treaters wrap tool steel and bright parts in SS 321 foil before hardening, sealing out air so surfaces come out scale-free. The stabilised structure survives repeated furnace cycles above 800 °C, and thin annealed stock folds tightly around complex shapes.

Stainless Steel 321 Foils used in Aerospace and Thermal Management

Aerospace and Thermal Management

Aerospace builders use Alloy 321 foil for thermal blankets, firewall shielding, and bellows where mass must stay low. The foil keeps its corrosion resistance across welded seams without a post-weld anneal, riding out the heat cycling that fatigues plain 304.

Stainless Steel 321 Foils used in Petrochemical and Chemical Processing

Petrochemical and Chemical Processing

Process fabricators line vessels, gaskets, and expansion joints with 321 stainless steel foil in plants running above 500 °C. Because titanium ties up carbon before chromium carbide can form, weld zones resist the acid attack that follows carbide precipitation.

Stainless Steel 321 Foils used in Automotive Exhaust and Gaskets

Automotive Exhaust and Gaskets

Exhaust and engine shops blank SS 321 foil into multi-layer gaskets, heat-shield laminates, and sensor packing. The foil conforms to flange faces under bolt load, and its 40% elongation lets embossed sealing beads form without splitting.

Stainless Steel 321 Foils Price

Stainless Steel 321 Foils price in India runs around INR 235 to 450 per kg, roughly USD 2.5-4.7 per kg for export buyers, with thinner gauges and specialty finishes at the upper end of that range. Nickel and ferrochrome benchmarks, width, finish, and volume all move the figure, so call or WhatsApp us for today's rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness range is available for SS 321 Foils?

SS 321 foils are available from 0.03 mm to 0.08 mm thick, in any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm. We hold width to ±0.1 mm in-house.

What is the maximum service temperature for 321 Stainless Steel Foils?

Type 321 stainless steel foil gives oxidation resistance approaching 900 °C and holds creep strength through continuous service in the 425 to 815 °C range. The titanium stabilisation keeps the grade sound across that band.

Why choose SS 321 Foils over SS 304 Foils for high-temperature use?

SS 321 foils carry titanium, which binds carbon into stable carbide and stops chromium carbide from forming at grain boundaries during welding and thermal cycling. That keeps 321 resistant to intergranular corrosion at temperatures where 304 sensitises.

Can SS 321 Foils be custom-slit to specific widths?

Yes, we precision-slit SS 321 foils in-house to any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm, holding a width tolerance of ±0.1 mm. Slit, mill, deburred, and round edges are all available.

Which surface finishes are offered on Stainless Steel 321 Foils?

Available finishes include BA (Bright Annealed), 2B, Matte, and Matte PVC. Deburred or round edges suit wrapping and gasket work, where a sharp slit edge would mark the adjacent part.

Where can I source SS 321 Foils in India?

You can source SS 321 foils in India from us at Riddhi Siddhi Impex. Our Mumbai and Taloja warehouses hold ready foil stock for immediate slitting, and as a manufacturer, supplier, and exporter, we serve buyers across India and overseas. Receive a quote within 24 hours.
