What is Stainless Steel 409 Foil?

Stainless Steel 409 foil is a thin-gauge ferritic chromium stainless steel stabilised with titanium and carrying 10.5 to 11.7% chromium. The titanium locks up carbon and nitrogen as carbonitrides, so welded zones keep their ductility without post-weld annealing. With almost no nickel, these stainless steel foils are the most economical stainless grade, magnetic in every condition, and chosen where oxidation resistance at moderate heat matters more than raw strength. Stainless Steel 409 foil finds typical use in automotive heat shields, flexible exhaust couplings, spacer gaskets, and industrial silencer wraps.

As a reliable 409 Stainless Steel foil supplier, every 409 foil that is issued from our plant is cold-rolled and slit in-house from stainless steel coil rather than resold as mill width. Material ships in the annealed soft condition to ASTM A240 in any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm at thicknesses reaching the ultra-thin gauge range. Buyers pick 2B, BA, or matte finishes with slit, deburred, or round edges.

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 409 Foils

Titanium is the element that defines this grade. Added at six times the combined carbon and nitrogen, it forms carbonitrides that keep chromium free to build the passive film.

Element Composition (% by weight)
Carbon (C) 0.030 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.040 max
Sulphur (S) 0.020 max
Silicon (Si) 1.00 max
Chromium (Cr) 10.50 to 11.70
Nickel (Ni) 0.50 max
Titanium (Ti) 6x(C+N) min to 0.50 max
Niobium (Nb) 0.17 max
Nitrogen (N) 0.030 max
Iron (Fe) Balance

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 409 Foils

Elongation is what makes AISI 409 Stainless Steel Foil attractive to press shops. Annealed material reaches a minimum tensile strength of 380 MPa with 20% elongation, so it draws and folds without splitting. Foil ships soft only; 409 carries no hardness temper ladder. Below the standard's thin-gauge testing threshold, treat the values as indicative.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
380 MPa (55 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
170 MPa (25 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
20%
Hardness, maximum
88 HRB

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 409 Foils

These 3 industries widely use the 409 Foil issued from our slitting lines. Each selects the grade for oxidation resistance and clean weldability at a fraction of the austenitic cost.

Stainless Steel 409 Foils used in Automotive Exhaust and Emission Systems

Automotive Exhaust and Emission Systems

Exhaust makers use SS 409 foil for catalytic converter shells and housings, muffler wraps, heat shields, and flexible-joint layers. The grade handles continuous exhaust-gas temperatures around 675 °C, with intermittent excursions towards 815 °C, and titanium stabilisation keeps welded seams sound.

Stainless Steel 409 Foils used in Heat Shielding and Thermal Management

Heat Shielding and Thermal Management

Heat-shield fabricators press 409 foil into engine bay barriers, turbo blankets, and firewall linings. Ferritic steel expands roughly a third less than austenitic grades on heating, so shields cycle between hot and cold with little distortion. Reflective thin-gauge foil blocks radiant heat at minimal weight.

Stainless Steel 409 Foils used in Agricultural and General Engineering

Agricultural and General Engineering

Equipment builders form 409 foil into grain-dryer panels, silo linings, and general fabricated parts where a corrosion-resistant surface is needed at modest cost. The 20% minimum elongation gives room for deep forming, and the grade resists rural atmospheric exposure better than plain carbon steel.

Stainless Steel 409 Foils Price

Stainless Steel 409 Foils price in India runs around ₹160 to ₹240 per kg, roughly $1.8 to $2.6 per kg for export buyers. As a nickel-free ferritic grade, 409 SS Foils cost far less than austenitic foil. The range is indicative; thickness, width, finish, and volume all move it. Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of SS 409 Foil is available?

SS 409 foils is from 0.03 mm to 0.08 mm thick, in any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm. We slit width in-house to ±0.1 mm.

Can 409 Stainless Steel Foil be welded?

Yes, 409 foil welds well. The titanium stabilisation ties up carbon and nitrogen, so the weld zone keeps its ductility and resists intergranular corrosion. TIG welding with a 409 or 409Cb filler suits thin gauges.

What is the maximum service temperature for SS 409 Foil?

Grade 409 gives continuous oxidation resistance to about 675 °C, with intermittent excursions towards 815 °C in air. That range covers automotive exhaust and moderate-temperature heat shielding.

What is the difference between 409 and 409L Stainless Steel Foil?

409L (UNS S40910) carries lower carbon than plain 409, which improves weldability and reduces the risk of sensitisation. Both are ferritic titanium-stabilised grades with matching corrosion and oxidation resistance.

What finishes are available for 409 Stainless Steel Foil?

We supply SS 409 foils in 2B, BA, and matte finishes, with slit, deburred, or round edge conditions to suit gasket, winding, and forming work.

Where can I source SS 409 Foil in India?

You can source SS 409 foils in India from us at Riddhi Siddhi Impex. Our Mumbai and Taloja warehouses hold ready ferritic foil stock, and we will provide quotes within 24 hours.
