What is Stainless Steel 439 Strip?

Stainless Steel 439 strip is a ferritic grade carrying 17 to 19% chromium, stabilised with titanium alone. Titanium binds carbon and nitrogen into stable carbonitrides, so a welded seam keeps its intergranular corrosion resistance with no post-weld anneal. With almost no nickel, these stainless steel strips resist chloride stress corrosion cracking, are ferromagnetic, and will not harden by heat treatment. Grade 439 is commonly used for the cooler sections of automotive exhaust systems, while Grade 441 is preferred for hotter operating zones. Typical uses of 439 stainless steel Winding Strip include automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, mufflers, and catalytic converter components.

As a reliable 439 stainless steel strip supplier, all of our 439 stainless steel slit coils are cold slit on our own lines rather than resold at mill width. Strip despatches annealed to ASTM A240 in gauges from 0.03 mm to 5 mm, with five finishes, four edge conditions, and batch traceability from mother coil to packing list.

Specifications of Stainless Steel 439 Strips

We provide ASTM A240 Type 439 strips in the annealed soft condition, finished to five surfaces, edge-conditioned four ways, and slit to the exact width your line runs.

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 439 Strips

The titanium window matters most here. A floor of 0.20 + 4(C+N) traps interstitials, while the 1.10% ceiling protects surface quality on thin gauges.

Element Composition (% by weight)
Carbon (C) 0.03 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.040 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Silicon (Si) 1.00 max
Chromium (Cr) 17.00 to 19.00
Nickel (Ni) 0.50 max
Titanium (Ti) 0.20 + 4(C+N) min, 1.10 max
Nitrogen (N) 0.03 max
Iron (Fe) Balance
Aluminium (Al) 0.15 max

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 439 Strips

Annealed AISI 439 strip reaches 415 MPa minimum tensile strength with 22% elongation, enough headroom for drawing, folding, and lock-seaming. No temper ladder applies; this ferritic ships soft only.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
415 MPa (60 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
22%
Hardness, maximum
89 HRB

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 439 Strips

These 4 industries widely use the 439 ferritic stainless steel strips we slit. Each one trades the nickel premium of austenitic strip for a stabilised ferritic that welds cleanly and resists chloride cracking.

Stainless Steel 439 Strips used in Automotive Exhaust Cold-End Components

Automotive Exhaust Cold-End Components

Muffler shells, resonator bodies, and tailpipe blanks form from SS 439 strips because the cold end of an exhaust collects acidic condensate at every shutdown. Stabilised welds shrug off that attack without annealing. Hot-end sections near the manifold move up to 441 strips.

Stainless Steel 439 Strips used in Water Heaters and Heat Exchange Equipment

Water Heaters and Heat Exchange Equipment

Tank producers weld domestic water-heater bodies from Type 439 strips since chloride-bearing potable water cracks unprotected austenitic seams. Heat-exchanger fins press from the same slit coil. Ferritic steel conducts heat faster and expands less than 304, so brazed joints see less thermal stress.

Stainless Steel 439 Strips used in Welded Tube and Pipe Mills

Welded Tube and Pipe Mills

Tube mills feed 439 SS strips straight from the slitter into forming rolls and weld a continuous longitudinal seam. Width held at ±0.1 mm keeps the seam gap steady, cutting weld defects at line speed. Condenser and exhaust tubing both start as this slit strip.

Stainless Steel 439 Strips used in Kitchen and Appliance Fabrication

Kitchen and Appliance Fabrication

Appliance plants draw oven liners, sink bowls, and dishwasher panels from annealed 439 stainless steel strips. The 22% minimum elongation covers deep pressing, a BA or Scotch-Brite surface survives daily detergent wash-downs, and near-zero nickel keeps unit cost under comparable 304 pressings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness and width options do you offer for SS 439 Strips?

We slit SS 439 strips from 0.03 mm to 5 mm thick and to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm, held at ±0.1 mm on width.

What is the difference between 430 and 439 Stainless Steel Strips?

The difference between 430 and 439 stainless steel strips is titanium stabilisation. Grade 439 locks up carbon so welded joints keep their corrosion resistance, while unstabilised 430 sensitises at the weld and suits unwelded work instead.

Do SS439 Strips need post-weld annealing?

No, SS439 strips do not need post-weld annealing. Titanium ties up carbon and nitrogen before chromium carbides can form, so the heat-affected zone stays resistant to intergranular attack as welded.

Which surface finishes are available on Stainless Steel 439 Strips?

Stainless Steel 439 strips are available in BA, 2B, Scotch-Brite, Matte, and Matte PVC finishes. Deburred or round edges suit forming work where a sharp slit edge would score tooling.

Is SS 439 Strip the same material as EN 1.4510?

Yes, SS 439 strip and EN 1.4510 (X3CrTi17) describe the same titanium-stabilised 17 to 19% chromium ferritic steel. ASTM A240 lists it as Type 439, UNS S43035.

Where can I source Stainless Steel 439 Strips in custom widths in India?

You can source custom-width Stainless Steel 439 Strips from us at Riddhi Siddhi Impex in Mumbai. We slit to your width, despatch in 4 to 5 days, and quote within 24 hours by phone or WhatsApp.
