What are Stainless Steel 441 Coils?

Stainless Steel 441 is a ferritic grade holding 17.50 to 19.50% chromium, stabilised twice over with titanium and niobium together. The two elements lock up carbon and nitrogen, so welded joints keep their corrosion resistance, and the steel holds strength through repeated heating. Scaling resistance in cyclic exhaust-type service reaches roughly 950 °C. The alloy carries no deliberate nickel, stays ferromagnetic, and doesn't respond to hardening heat treatment, so mills deliver it annealed. These stainless steel coils are used in automotive exhaust systems and heat exchangers.

As a reliable 441 Stainless Steel Coil supplier, we hold coil inventory sourced from reputed primary mills and slits it to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm. Cold-rolled material covers thin gauges down to 0.03 mm, while hot-rolled pickled coil handles the heavier end up to 5 mm. The product is within our wider stainless steel coils range.

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 441 Coils

Dual stabilisation defines this chemistry. Titanium and niobium bind carbon before it can form chromium carbides at weld grain boundaries. The ASTM A240 limits for UNS S44100 appear below.

Element Composition (% by weight)
Carbon (C) 0.030 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Silicon (Si) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.040 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Chromium (Cr) 17.50 to 19.50
Nickel (Ni) 1.00 max
Nitrogen (N) 0.030 max
Titanium (Ti) 0.10 to 0.50
Niobium (Nb) Nb: 0.30 + 9×C min, 0.90 max
Iron (Fe) Balance

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 441 Coils

Formability decides most 441 coil orders. Annealed material combines a 415 MPa minimum tensile strength with 20% elongation, so blanks press and deep-draw cleanly. Grade 441 is not a hardness grade, so coils ship annealed only.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
414 MPa (60 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
241 MPa (35 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
20%

Equivalent Grades of Stainless Steel 441 Coils

Buyers ordering 1.4509 coils or X2CrTiNb18 material can match the designations below. Some suppliers quote SUS 441, though Japanese standards define no direct 441 equivalent.

Country / Standard Designation
USA (UNS) S44100
Europe (EN) X2CrTiNb18
Germany (W.Nr) 1.4509

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 441 Coils

These 4 industries use most of the 441 stainless steel coils we stock. Each one buys the grade for weldability, cyclic oxidation resistance, and a nickel-free price that stays steadier than austenitic alternatives.

Stainless Steel 441 Coils used in Automotive Exhaust Systems

Automotive Exhaust Systems

Exhaust fabricators use SS 441 coils in manifolds, downpipes, catalytic converter shells, and silencer bodies. Dual titanium-niobium stabilisation preserves weld-zone corrosion resistance through assembly, while niobium adds the creep strength hot-end components demand. In cyclic running, the grade withstands scaling to about 950 °C.

Stainless Steel 441 Coils used in Kitchen and Domestic Appliances

Kitchen and Domestic Appliances

Appliance makers press 441 stainless steel coil into oven cavities, hob trims, range hoods, and washing machine drums. The ferritic structure draws well in 2B or bright annealed finish, and freedom from nickel keeps part costs predictable when nickel markets swing. Magnetic response suits induction cookware bases.

Stainless Steel 441 Coils used in Architectural Cladding and Roofing

Architectural Cladding and Roofing

Facade contractors specify AISI 441 stainless steel coils for standing-seam roofing, rainscreen panels, and column covers. Long welded seams stay bright because the stabilising elements stop sensitisation in the heat-affected zone. Thermal expansion runs about two-thirds that of austenitic sheet, so wide panels distort less.

Stainless Steel 441 Coils used in Heat Exchange Equipment

Heat Exchange Equipment

Heat exchanger builders roll UNS S44100 coils into recuperator plates, flue-gas ducting, and burner components. Oxidation resistance holds through repeated thermal cycling, where plain 430 scales earlier. Prolonged exposure between 400 and 500 °C invites alpha-prime embrittlement, so designers keep continuous duty outside that band.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 441 grade Stainless Steel Coil?

Stainless steel coil 441 is a dual-stabilised ferritic coil holding 17.50 to 19.50% chromium with titanium and niobium additions, supplied to ASTM A240 under UNS S44100. It welds cleanly and resists cyclic oxidation to roughly 950 °C.

How do SS 441 and SS 439 Coils differ?

The difference between SS 441 and SS 439 coils lies in the stabiliser: 439 relies on titanium alone, while 441 adds 0.30 to 1.00% niobium. That addition raises high-temperature strength and creep resistance, so 441 suits exhaust hot-ends where 439 serves cooler sections.

Which is better for Coils, SS 441 or SS 304?

SS 441 coils beat SS 304 on price stability and stress corrosion cracking resistance because the grade contains no nickel. SS 304 keeps the advantage in wet, chloride-rich service.

What surface finishes are available for SS 441 Coils?

We supply SS 441 coils in 2B, BA (Bright Annealed), Matte, Matte PVC, and Skin Pass finishes, with slit, mill, deburred, or round edges.
