Shim applications require good ductility rather than high strength. Annealed AISI 439 shims reach a 415 MPa minimum tensile strength with 22% elongation, so blanks punch and fold without cracking. Heat treatment will not harden the grade, so every shim ships soft. Mechanical values for gauges below 0.38 mm are indicative only.
