What are Inconel 625 Foils?

Inconel 625 foils are thin, cold-rolled flat products of a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy holding 58% minimum nickel. Chromium at 20 to 23% guards against oxidation, while 8 to 10% molybdenum and niobium stiffen the matrix in solid solution. The foil holds strength to about 980 °C and resists pitting, crevice attack, and chloride stress-corrosion cracking, so fabricators shape it into bellows, seals, and diaphragms. Inconel 625 foils are typically used for high-temperature aerospace components, industrial bellows, seals, and corrosion-resistant diaphragms.

Temper Conditions of Inconel 625 Foils

Temper describes how much cold rolling a foil has taken after annealing, which sets its strength and how it behaves under forming. We supply Inconel 625 foil in a soft annealed condition and in cold-rolled hard tempers, each rolled to a tensile range we agree with the customer at the order stage and certify on the EN 10204 Type 3.1 mill test certificate. These cold-worked tempers are mill tempers, not conditions defined by ASTM B443, which covers only the annealed and solution annealed grades. The sections below cover the six conditions we roll and the work each one goes into.

Soft (Annealed) Inconel 625 Foil

Soft annealed foil solves the complaint we hear most about hard foil: parts that crack at the bend. The annealed foil we supply meets the Grade 1 minimum of 827 MPa tensile, with hardness reported on the certificate we issue with every coil. Our customers draw it deeply and form tight radii without splitting, shaping it into bellows, seal diaphragms, and honeycomb skins in a single pass. Where a design calls for service above 593 °C, we recommend the Grade 2 solution-annealed condition at a 690 MPa minimum, and we confirm which grade applies before we book the order.

Quarter Hard Inconel 625 Foil

We produce this temper with a light cold reduction that lifts tensile strength above the annealed minimum while keeping enough ductility for gentle forming. We roll it as a mill temper to the tensile range fixed at order, verified by tensile test on the certificate. It suits customers who find soft foil too slack to hold shape but know full stiffness would resist their die. We supply it for shim stock, light flat springs, and flat parts that must stay flat after blanking.

Half Hard Inconel 625 Foil

Half hard suits customers who want blanked parts to keep their edge and lie flat on the bench. We roll it with a heavier cold reduction than quarter hard and confirm the certified tensile range on the first-off certificate. Because springback rises at this level, we advise our customers to check tooling allowances against the first-off sample we send before they commit the full run. We supply it for pressure diaphragms, gasket windings, and sensor membranes where dimensional hold matters more than deep draw.

Three-Quarter Hard Inconel 625 Foil

Our customers specify this condition for flat springs and stiff membranes that must resist deflection. We cold roll the foil towards the upper end of formability, to the range agreed on the order. At this hardness the foil accepts only shallow bends before it starts to fracture, so when a drawing shows a tight radius we steer the order back towards a softer temper instead. On our slitting line we interleave narrow coils with paper at this temper, since the harder surface marks easily.

Hard Inconel 625 Foil

When a design calls for high yield in a thin section, we roll hard temper foil to a strength range fixed against the order. Because foil cannot take a Rockwell C indent reliably at these gauges, we verify the temper by tensile test or microhardness and log the result on the mill test certificate. Forming is limited to slight contours; the metal is chosen here for stiffness, not shaping. We supply it for flat spring elements, stiffening laminates, and backing strips for seals and gaskets.

Full Hard Inconel 625 Foil

Full hard is the stiffest condition we roll, produced for flat spring stock and load-bearing seal elements. It is a mill temper, and its strength figures come from the cold reduction agreed at order. Burr behaviour changes at full hard, so we set slitting clearances tighter to keep edges clean on narrow widths. We do not supply this temper for forming work; we supply it where stiffness in a flat section is the whole requirement, and we confirm the certified tensile range with the customer before rolling.
