What is SMO 254 Foil?

SMO 254 foil is a thin, cold-rolled super austenitic stainless steel foil built on roughly 20% chromium, 18% nickel, 6% molybdenum, copper, and 0.2% nitrogen. That chemistry pushes the pitting resistance equivalent number above 40, so the grade prevents chloride pitting, crevice attack, and stress corrosion cracking where 316L fails. Its yield strength is approximately double that of standard austenitic grades, letting fabricators work with thinner sections in seawater and acid service. It is mainly applied in chemical and petrochemical industries and desalination plants.

We process every UNS S31254 foil in-house on our own slitting lines, sourced from reputed primary mills. Material leaves in soft annealed condition to ASTM A240, cut to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm and held to ±0.1 mm. Buyers can specify BA or 2B surfaces and slit, deburred, or round edges, backed by mill test certification.

Specifications of SMO 254 Foils

We provide ASTM A240 S31254 foil in annealed condition, cold rolled and precision slit, in two surface finishes and four edge options, in coil.

Surface Finish BA (Bright Annealed), 2B
Edge Slit edge, Mill edge, Deburred edge, Round edge
Supply Form Cold Rolled (CR)

Chemical Composition of SMO 254 Foils

Molybdenum defines this grade. The 6.0 to 6.5% addition, working with 0.18 to 0.22% nitrogen, drives a PREN near 43, the margin that keeps 254 SMO foil serviceable in warm seawater. Copper at 0.50 to 1.00% adds resistance in sulphuric acid. The full ASTM A240 balance appears below.

Element Composition (%)
Carbon (C) 0.020 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.030 max
Sulphur (S) 0.010 max
Silicon (Si) 0.80 max
Chromium (Cr) 19.50 to 20.50
Nickel (Ni) 17.50 to 18.50
Molybdenum (Mo) 6.00 to 6.50
Copper (Cu) 0.50 to 1.00
Nitrogen (N) 0.180 to 0.220

Mechanical Properties of SMO 254 Foils

Strength sets 6Mo foil apart. Annealed UNS S31254 foil to ASTM A240 carries a 650 MPa minimum tensile strength with a 300 MPa minimum yield, close to twice the yield of 304 or 316. These minimums apply to material 0.50 mm and thicker, so values for thinner foil gauges are indicative. Foils leave in soft annealed condition only, so no temper ladder applies.

Property Value
Tensile Strength, minimum
650 MPa (94 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
300 MPa (44 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
35%

Equivalent Grades of SMO 254 Foils

International buyers can cross-reference UNS S31254 foil against their regional standard below. The 1.4547 foil we stock matches every designation listed.

Europe (EN) X1CrNiMoCuN20-18-7
Germany (W.Nr) 1.4547
Sweden (SIS) SS 2378

Industrial Applications of SMO 254 Foils

These 4 industries use 254 SMO foil that we slit. In each case, the buyer chooses the grade for chloride pitting resistance, crevice corrosion resistance, or high strength in a thin gauge.

SMO 254 Foils used in Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Chemical plants use 6Mo foil for gaskets, diaphragms, and vessel linings in hot chloride and acid media. The copper addition helps in sulphuric acid service, while the high molybdenum content resists the pitting that perforates 316 in months.

SMO 254 Foils used in Desalination and Seawater Systems

Desalination and Seawater Systems

Seawater resistance defines this duty. Desalination plants fit UNS S31254 foil into heat recovery components and instrumentation exposed to hot, high-chloride brine, where the PREN above 40 keeps pitting and crevice corrosion in check. The strength margin allows thinner parts than austenitic stainless steel would survive.

SMO 254 Foils used in Pulp, Paper, and Bleaching Equipment

Pulp, Paper, and Bleaching Equipment

Chlorine dioxide bleaching lines corrode ordinary stainless steel quickly. Mills specify 254 SMO foil for washer components, seals, and bleaching hardware in warm, acidic, chloride-bearing liquor. The grade holds its passive film where 316L pits, extending service intervals for thin gasket and diaphragm stock.

SMO 254 Foils used in Oil, Gas, and Offshore

Oil, Gas, and Offshore

Topside and subsea equipment runs in saline, sometimes sour, service. SMO 254 foil resists pitting and crevice attack in chloride-rich seawater while carrying the mechanical load offshore work demands. Slit to ±0.1 mm, it suits shim stock, seals, and instrumentation parts.
