What are Stainless Steel 316L Coils?

Stainless Steel 316L coils are continuous flat-rolled lengths of low-carbon austenitic steel, wound for feeding into presses, roll formers, and tube mills. The grade carries the designation UNS S31603. Chromium at 16.0-18.0% builds the passive oxide layer, nickel at 10.0-14.0% stabilises the austenitic structure, and 2.00-3.00% molybdenum blocks pitting in chloride media. Carbon is capped at 0.030%, so welded joints resist intergranular attack without any post-weld anneal.

We source prime stainless steel coils from reputed primary mills, hold them in ready stock, and slit each 316L stainless steel coil in-house to any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm. Material ships in annealed soft condition to ASTM A240. We hold around 1000 tonnes in ready stock at any given time across gauges, which is why standard orders leave in 4 to 5 days.

Chemical Composition of SS 316L Coils

Molybdenum sets this grade apart within the 300 series. UNS S31603 coils hold 2.00-3.00% of it, which defends against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride service.

Element Composition (%)
Carbon (C) 0.030 max
Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.045 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Silicon (Si) 0.75 max
Chromium (Cr) 16.0-18.0
Nickel (Ni) 10.0-14.0
Molybdenum (Mo) 2.00-3.00
Nitrogen (N) 0.10 max
Iron (Fe) Balance

Mechanical Properties of 316L Stainless Steel Coils

Annealed 316L SS coils meet 485 MPa minimum tensile strength and 40% elongation, so deep drawing and roll forming run cleanly. ASTM A240 caps hardness at 217 HBW.

Property Value
Tensile Strength, minimum
485 MPa (70 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
170 MPa (25 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
40%
Hardness, maximum
217 HBW / 95 HRB

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 316L Coils

These 5 industries consistently rely on SS 316L coils we supply. Buyers choose the grade for weldability and chloride resistance, and coil form feeds their forming lines without intermediate cutting.

Stainless Steel 316L Coils used in Chemical Processing

Chemical Processing

Process plants order 316L stainless steel coil for reactor linings, storage tanks, and transfer pipework cladding. Sulphuric and acetic acid streams at moderate concentrations corrode 304 equipment; molybdenum in the 316L matrix slows that damage to serviceable rates. Coil form also lets fabricators roll vessel shells with fewer welded seams.

Stainless Steel 316L Coils used in Food and Beverage

Food and Beverage

Dairies and breweries run hot caustic cleaning cycles every day. 316L SS coils survive those washdowns without pitting, so product contact surfaces stay smooth and hygienic through years of service. Tank skins, conveyor panels, and filling machinery all use coil. A 2B or BA finish wipes clean and shows fouling early.

Stainless Steel 316L Coils used in Pharmaceutical

Pharmaceutical

Pharmaceutical equipment builders specify SS316L coils for mixing vessels, cleanroom panelling, and purified water circuits. The grade tolerates repeated steam sterilisation and chloride-bearing water loops. A polished low-carbon surface meets sanitary standards and leaves no crevices where residue could gather between batches, which keeps validation records clean.

Stainless Steel 316L Coils used in Marine and Offshore

Marine and Offshore

Marine Grade 316L coils are used in deck hardware, splash-zone cladding, and desalination plant internals. Salt spray destroys leaner stainless grades through pitting and crevice corrosion. With 2.00-3.00% molybdenum in the matrix, 316L withstands constant chloride exposure, and shipyards press fittings straight from coil stock as required.

Stainless Steel 316L Coils used in Heat Exchangers

Heat Exchangers

Heat exchanger builders wind fins and press plates from thin-gauge 316L SS coils, often under 0.5 mm. Thermal cycling doesn't fatigue the alloy quickly. Cooling-water chlorides on the shell side would pit lesser grades, yet 316L holds up, and our slitting line cuts stock to your required strip width at ±0.1 mm..

Frequently Asked Questions

What thicknesses are available for SS 316L Coils?

We stock SS 316L coils from 0.03 mm to 5 mm thick, slit to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm at ±0.1 mm. Narrow slit coil requirements are within our stainless steel 316L strips range.

What is the difference between 316 and 316L Coils?

The main difference between 316 and 316L coils is carbon content: Grade 316 permits 0.08% maximum, while 316L is limited to 0.030%. Post-weld annealing isn't practical on large fabrications; the low-carbon grade holds off intergranular attack as welded.

Which standards do your 316L Coils conform to?

Our 316L coils conform to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 as standard, and we also supply against ASTM A666. EN 10204 Type 3.1 / 3.2 mill test certificates accompany any order on request.
