What are Stainless Steel 301 Coils?

Stainless Steel 301 coils are flat-rolled austenitic stainless steel, leaner than Type 304, holding 16 to 18% chromium with 6 to 8% nickel. That lower nickel makes 301 metastable, so it work-hardens strongly under cold rolling and reaches high tensile and yield strength in the tempered condition. Corrosion resistance stays close to the milder austenitic grades. Fabricators specify AISI 301 coils where high strength gained through cold working is more important than maximum corrosion resistance. Stainless Steel 301 Coils are typically used in structural aircraft parts and automotive components.

We source parent coils from reputed primary mills and carry ready stock for immediate supply, sourcing stainless steel coils from reputed primary mills and slitting to width in-house. Material ships annealed, in 2B and BA, with mill or slit edges and mill test certificates on request. Where a temper is needed, 301 is offered as hardened strip in a separate strip form.

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 301 Coils

Nickel defines this grade. At 6 to 8%, it sits below the 8 to 10.5% of Type 304, which leaves the austenite metastable and drives the strong work-hardening 301 is known for. Chromium at 16 to 18% forms the passive oxide layer responsible for corrosion resistance.

Element Composition (% by weight)
Carbon (C) 0.15 max
Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.045 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Silicon (Si) 0.75 max
Chromium (Cr) 16.00 to 18.00
Nickel (Ni) 6.00 to 8.00
Nitrogen (N) 0.10 max

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 301 Coils

Annealed Type 301 stainless steel coils reach a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa with 40% elongation, so they draw, roll, and bend without cracking.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
515 MPa (75 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
40%

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 301 Coils

These 4 industries specify most of the 301 austenitic stainless steel coils we supply, choosing the grade for work-hardening strength, spring action, or cost.

Stainless Steel 301 Coils used in Automotive and Transport

Automotive and Transport

Automotive fabricators specify SS 301 coils for structural brackets, trim, wheel covers, and body reinforcements. The high work-hardening rate lets a thin coil form a stiff, strong part that trims weight, while good annealed formability keeps deep-drawn sections from splitting.

Stainless Steel 301 Coils used in Springs, Clips, and Fasteners

Aerospace & Aviation

Stainless Steel 301 coils are used in the aerospace and aviation industry to manufacture spring clips, retaining rings, brackets, clamps, and other precision-formed components. The alloy develops high strength through cold working, offers excellent fatigue resistance, and maintains good formability, making it ideal for lightweight aircraft components exposed to continuous vibration and mechanical stress.

Stainless Steel 301 Coils used in Architectural and Construction

Architectural and Construction

Architectural fabricators use 301 stainless coils for structural panels, curtain-wall members, and trim that must carry load and resist weathering. Cold forming adds strength while the bright surface stands up outdoors, so slim sections stay rigid, and the 2B and BA finishes we stock suit visible cladding.

Stainless Steel 301 Coils used in General Engineering

General Engineering

Engineering and appliance shops form 301 SS coils into conveyor components, hose clamps, gaskets, and diaphragms that need spring and strength together. The 40% minimum elongation gives deep-draw headroom, while cold work builds the stiffness a part needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness and width range is available for SS 301 Coils?

We supply SS 301 Coils in thicknesses from 0.03 mm to 5 mm and widths up to 2000 mm, with coil ID from 150 mm to 610 mm and coil OD up to 1800 mm. Custom widths are slit at ±0.1 mm.

What is the difference between SS 301 Coils and SS 304 Coils?

The main difference is the nickel content. SS 301 carries 6 to 8% nickel against 8 to 10.5% in SS 304. The leaner 301 work-hardens faster and reaches higher strength when cold rolled, while SS 304 holds broader corrosion resistance.

Are Stainless Steel 301 Coils supplied hardened or annealed?

Our Stainless Steel 301 Coils are supplied in the annealed mill condition. Grade 301 gains its temper through cold rolling, so where a set hardness is required, we offer that as hardened 301 strip in a separate strip form.

Can SS 301 Coils be welded?

Yes, SS 301 Coils can be welded using standard austenitic methods with a matching filler. The grade is prone to carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, so a post-weld anneal restores corrosion resistance in aggressive service.

Where can I source Stainless Steel 301 Coils in India?
