Stainless Steel 301 coils are flat-rolled austenitic stainless steel, leaner than Type 304, holding 16 to 18% chromium with 6 to 8% nickel. That lower nickel makes 301 metastable, so it work-hardens strongly under cold rolling and reaches high tensile and yield strength in the tempered condition. Corrosion resistance stays close to the milder austenitic grades.
