What are Hastelloy C22 Foils?

Hastelloy C22 foils are thin-gauge flat products of a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy. Chromium at 20.0 to 22.5% protects the foil in oxidising media. Molybdenum at 12.5 to 14.5%, working with 2.5 to 3.5% tungsten, blocks pitting and crevice attack in reducing acids and chlorides. Carbon stays at 0.015% max, so thin-welded sections enter service without post-weld annealing. Rolled down to foil gauge, the grade becomes diaphragm, bellows, and gasket stock for chemistry that destroys stainless foil. These Hastelloy Foils are used in pharmaceuticals and chemical processing industries.

As a reputed Hastelloy C22 Foil supplier, we slit every UNS N06022 foil on our own precision lines, cutting any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm at ±0.1 mm. Material ships soft annealed in BA, 2B, Matte surfaces with slit, deburred, or round edges.

Chemical Composition of Hastelloy C22 Foils

Tungsten at 2.5 to 3.5% rounds out the Ni-Cr-Mo core of Hastelloy C-22 foil, sharpening its resistance to localised chloride corrosion. The full ASTM B575 limits appear below.

Element Composition (%)
Nickel (Ni) Balance (approx. 56)
Chromium (Cr) 20.0 to 22.5
Molybdenum (Mo) 12.5 to 14.5
Tungsten (W) 2.5 to 3.5
Iron (Fe) 2.0 to 6.0
Cobalt (Co) 2.5 max
Manganese (Mn) 0.50 max
Vanadium (V) 0.35 max
Silicon (Si) 0.08 max
Carbon (C) 0.015 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.02 max
Sulphur (S) 0.02 max

Mechanical Properties of Hastelloy C22 Foils

Annealed Alloy C22 foil meets a 690 MPa minimum tensile strength with 310 MPa yield and 45% elongation, ductility that suits deep drawing and tight forming. ASTM B575 applies its yield and elongation minimums to gauges of 0.5 mm and above, so values for thinner foil are indicative. C22 isn't a temper-graded alloy: we hold stock annealed, and cold-rolled foil at higher tensile levels is produced against order and certified individually.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
690 MPa (100 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
310 MPa (45 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
45%

Industrial Applications of Hastelloy C22 Foils

These 4 industries use Nickel Alloy C-22 foil we dispatch, each pairing aggressive chemistry with thin-section components.

Hastelloy C22 Foils used in Chemical Processing

Chemical Processing

Chemical plants use Alloy C-22 foil in diaphragms, gaskets, and instrument bellows for circuits carrying mixed acids. One grade covers streams that swing between oxidising and reducing composition, and its as-welded corrosion resistance lets fabricators build thin assemblies without a solution anneal.

Hastelloy C22 Foils used in Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology

Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology

Hygienic seals, rupture discs, and sensing diaphragms in pharmaceutical lines use Alloy 22 foil. The alloy withstands chlorinated and acidic clean-in-place agents through repeated sterilisation cycles. Product streams stay free of metallic pick-up, which matters wherever batch purity is audited.

Hastelloy C22 Foils used in Pollution Control and Flue Gas Desulphurisation

Pollution Control and Flue Gas Desulphurisation

Expansion joint bellows and seal foils in FGD ducting rely on HC-22 foil. Hot condensate in scrubber systems mixes sulphuric acid with heavy chloride loading, and the high chromium content keeps thin flexible sections serviceable between maintenance outages.

Hastelloy C22 Foils used in Pulp and Paper

Pulp and Paper

Bleach plant instrumentation draws on C22 foil for measurement diaphragms and protective linings near chlorine dioxide generators. Oxidising bleach chemistry favours the grade, and thin gauge preserves the sensitivity these sensing parts need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness range is available for Hastelloy C22 Foils?

Hastelloy C22 foils are available from 0.03 mm to 0.08 mm thick and 3 mm to 2000 mm wide, with width dimensions held to ±0.1 mm.

Do Hastelloy C22 Foils come in different temper conditions?

No, Hastelloy C22 foils don't carry a temper ladder because the grade is not classed among the cold-work hardness grades. We stock foil annealed, cold-rolled material with higher tensile strength that is rolled against specific orders and certified per batch.

What is the difference between Hastelloy C22 and C276 Foils?

The difference between Hastelloy C22 and C276 foils lies in the chromium-to-molybdenum balance. C22 foil runs 20.0 to 22.5% chromium, well above the 14.5 to 16.5% in C276, so it lasts longer in oxidising and mixed media. C276 carries more molybdenum and stays the pick for hot concentrated hydrochloric acid.

Can Hastelloy C22 Foils be welded?

Yes, Hastelloy C22 foils weld cleanly at thin gauge using ERNiCrMo-10 filler. Because carbon is capped at 0.015%, the heat-affected zone resists carbide precipitation and welded foil assemblies serve without further treatment.

Can Hastelloy C22 Foils be slit to custom widths?

Yes, we slit Hastelloy C22 foils to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm on our own lines, holding ±0.1 mm. Custom width slitting is the core of our foil service.

Where can I source Hastelloy C22 Foils in India?
