Hastelloy C276 strips are cold-rolled flat products of a nickel-molybdenum-chromium-tungsten alloy, slit to precise dimensions. Molybdenum at 15 to 17%, working with tungsten, gives the grade its resistance to reducing acids and pitting, while chromium at 14.5 to 16.5% carries resistance to oxidising media. The very low carbon ceiling of 0.010% limits carbide precipitation during welding, so the strip keeps its corrosion resistance in fabricated assemblies. Hastelloy C276 strip is typically used in chemical processing equipment, pollution control systems, and corrosive marine components.

Temper describes how much cold work a strip has received after its final anneal, and with C276 that rolling is the only route to higher strength, because the alloy does not respond to hardening heat treatment. ASTM B575 covers the solution annealed condition only and lists no fractional tempers for UNS N10276, so the five harder conditions are mill tempers, rolled to tensile ranges agreed at order stage and recorded on the EN 10204 mill test certificate. Press shops feel the difference at once: annealed strip draws and folds without complaint, while full hard strip fights the tool and springs back sharply.
Solution annealed strip is the condition we quote when a fabricator asks for C276 without naming a temper, because it is the form ASTM B575 certifies. The standard sets 690 MPa minimum tensile strength, 283 MPa minimum yield, and 40% elongation, with hardness sitting around 90 HRB. That ductility carries deep-drawn bellows convolutions, folded expansion joint profiles, and reactor lining panels through forming without cracking. Corrosion performance is certified in this condition alone, so any part facing hot hydrochloric or sulphuric acid should stay annealed.
Quarter hard answers the complaint we hear most often about annealed strip: blanked parts that curl and refuse to sit flat. A light rolling pass lifts tensile strength into the 830 to 1000 MPa range, with hardness running 96 HRB to 20 HRC, while enough ductility survives for moderate bends. Shims, flat gaskets and pressed spacers hold their shape at this level without punishing press tooling. We roll it as a mill temper, so the tensile window is agreed when you order and stated on the certificate rather than drawn from B575.
On the slitting line, half hard strip behaves differently from soft coil: the harder edge breaks cleanly, so burr height drops and narrow widths run with less camber. Strength sits between 1000 and 1170 MPa tensile, roughly 20 to 28 HRC. Springback rises in step, and a press brake needs tighter over-bend allowances than annealed material asks for. Buyers pick this temper for diaphragm blanks, contact carriers and instrument components that need stiffness yet still take a gentle form.
Flat springs, snap washers and valve shims in sour gas service are where three-quarter hard strip earns its keep. Cold rolling to this level brings tensile strength to 1170 to 1310 MPa and hardness to 28 to 34 HRC. Forming stays limited to shallow bends across the grain; sharp folds will crack. The temper suits parts blanked to final shape that must resist chloride and hydrogen sulphide attack while holding spring load over long service.
On the mill test certificate, hard temper strip appears with its agreed tensile range of 1310 to 1450 MPa, since no ASTM property table exists for cold worked C276. Hardness reads 34 to 40 HRC on gauges thick enough for Rockwell testing; at foil gauges we verify the temper by tensile test or microhardness instead. Formability is nearly gone, limited to large-radius sweeps. Blanked flat springs, wave washers and sealing rings for pollution control scrubbers use this condition.
Full hard is the wrong choice for anything that still needs forming, and we say so at the order desk. Rolled to 1450 to 1655 MPa with hardness of 40 to 45 HRC, the strip takes no bend beyond a slight curve and is blanked or etched straight to finished shape. Heavy cold work also changes the corrosion picture: the B575 guarantee applies to solution annealed material, so severe acid duty calls for the annealed condition even at a strength cost. Where a design needs full hard spring properties with certified elongation and corrosion is not the driver, stainless grade 301 is the more economical call. What remains is a niche this alloy owns: maximum-stiffness diaphragms, snap discs and etched springs in mildly corrosive chloride service.
