Stainless Steel 317L Shims are thin, flat spacers slit from a low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. The grade carries 3.0 to 4.0% molybdenum, more than 316L, which sharpens its resistance to chloride pitting and crevice attack. Chromium at 18 to 20% builds the passive film, while 11 to 15% nickel keeps the austenite stable and non-magnetic. A 0.030% carbon ceiling curbs chromium carbide precipitation during welding, so the shim holds its corrosion resistance across heat-affected zones. Fabricators use these stainless steel shims around flanges, pump housings, and reactor internals.
