What are Inconel 718 Shims?

Inconel 718 shims are thin precision spacers slit from nickel-chromium superalloy strip that gains its strength through ageing rather than cold work alone. During the solution treat and age cycle, niobium combines with nickel to precipitate the gamma double-prime phase, lifting tensile strength past 1240 MPa. High-performance Inconel shims in this condition hold their thickness and spring-back to about 650 °C, well beyond the reach of stainless shim stock. These Inconel 718 shims typically provide precise alignment and gap control in high-temperature aerospace engines, gas turbines, and exhaust systems.

As a reliable Inconel 718 shim supplier, we slit coils to ±0.1 mm on width, from 3 mm ribbons up to 2000 mm. Buyers order 718 shim stock solution annealed when the shim must be stamped or formed first, and precipitation hardened when it goes straight into service.

Chemical Composition of Inconel 718 Shims

Alloy 718 shims owe their age-hardening response to niobium with tantalum at 4.75 to 5.50%, supported by titanium and aluminium. The AMS 5596 limits follow.

Element Composition (%)
Nickel (Ni) 50.0 to 55.0
Chromium (Cr) 17.0 to 21.0
Iron (Fe) Balance
Niobium + Tantalum (Nb+Ta) 4.75 to 5.50
Molybdenum (Mo) 2.80 to 3.30
Titanium (Ti) 0.65 to 1.15
Aluminium (Al) 0.20 to 0.80
Cobalt (Co) 1.0 max
Carbon (C) 0.08 max
Manganese (Mn) 0.35 max
Silicon (Si) 0.35 max
Copper (Cu) 0.30 max
Boron (B) 0.006 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.015 max
Sulphur (S) 0.015 max

Mechanical Properties of Inconel 718 Shims

Unlike work-hardening shim alloys, Inconel 718 reaches full strength through heat treatment. Solution annealed shim stock stays formable near 1034 MPa tensile, so it can be blanked and bent before ageing.

We stock all three conditions. The annealed row below shows AMS 5596 minima and the aged row shows AMS 5597 minima, while the spring temper row is indicative and certified against the mill test certificate per order.

Condition Tensile Strength Yield Strength (0.2% Offset) Hardness Elongation (in 50mm)
Solution Annealed
1034 MPa (150 ksi) min 517 MPa (75 ksi) min 100 HRB max 30% min
Precipitation Hardened (Aged)
1240 MPa min 1035 MPa min 36 to 47 HRC Per print
Cold Rolled Spring Temper
1240 to 1585 MPa Per print 40 to 47 HRC

Industrial Applications of Inconel 718 Shims

Precision shims meet heat, vibration, and fatigue in every gap they fill. These 4 industries specify Alloy 718 shim stock most often.

Inconel 718 Shims used in Aerospace and Defence

Aerospace and Defence

Turbine engines use Inconel 718 shims for blade tip clearance, heat shields, and exhaust sealing layers. Gap-adjustment shim packs in aerostructures rely on the aged temper, which keeps fatigue strength through repeated thermal cycling to about 650°C.

Inconel 718 Shims used in Power Generation

Power Generation

Gas turbine builders fit Nickel Alloy 718 shims for rotor alignment and heat exchanger spacing. The precipitation-hardened shim resists creep over long service intervals, so the alignment set at assembly stays put through years of combustion heat.

Inconel 718 Shims used in Oil, Gas and Chemical Processing

Oil, Gas and Chemical Processing

Valve shims, pump spacing shims, and instrumentation spacers in sour service depend on 718 shim stock. Its resistance to sulphide stress cracking makes it a standard pick for wellhead and downhole assemblies.

Inconel 718 Shims used in General Engineering

General Engineering

Flat springs, bellows, and precision machine spacers draw on the spring temper. A cold rolled IN718 shim delivers high-cycle fatigue strength where carbon spring steel would relax or corrode.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Inconel 718 Shims used for?

Inconel 718 shims are used for turbine blade tip clearance, rotor alignment, valve and pump spacing, and flat springs across the aerospace, power, oil and gas, and general engineering sectors up to about 650 °C.

What thickness and width range is available for Inconel 718 Shims?

Inconel 718 shims are available from 0.03 mm to 5 mm thick and 3 mm to 2000 mm wide, custom slit to ±0.1 mm.

What conditions are Inconel 718 Shims supplied in?

Inconel 718 shims are supplied solution annealed for forming, precipitation hardened above 1240 MPa tensile for finished service, and cold rolled to spring temper for flat spring work.

What is the difference between Inconel 718 and Inconel 625 Shims?

The main difference between Inconel 718 and Inconel 625 shims is the strength against corrosion duty. Aged 718 shims carry roughly twice the yield strength for load-bearing gaps, while 625 shims suit chemical exposure where corrosion resistance matters more than strength.

What is the indicative price of Inconel 718 Shims per kg?

The indicative price of Inconel 718 shims is Rs 3600 to Rs 7200 per kg in India and USD 38 to USD 76 per kg for export, subject to gauge, temper, and market rates.

What standards cover Inconel 718 Shims?

Inconel 718 shims are covered by ASTM B670 for flat products. The annealed row below is AMS 5597 minima, and the aged row is AMS 5596 minima, under UNS N07718.
