Temper Conditions of Stainless Steel 301 Strips
Temper is the strength level a strip carries after cold rolling, set by how much the metal has been worked below its annealing point. We slit Type 301 in five conditions, running from Soft (Annealed) through Full Hard. ASTM A666 defines all five for this grade, which puts 301 in a small group where the harder tempers carry standard-backed tensile and yield minima rather than agreed ranges. That matters at the certificate stage: everything on this page is testable against a published table, not a mill understanding. Harder mill conditions such as spring temper and extra full hard are available on request, rolled to tensile ranges fixed at order stage.
Soft (Annealed) Stainless Steel 301 Strip

Annealed 301 sits at 515 MPa minimum tensile and 205 MPa yield with 40% elongation, so the strip takes tight bends and severe draws without splitting at the radius. Typical work includes deep-drawn housings, formed brackets, and blanks that get their strength from a later work-hardening step in the press rather than from the mill.
Quarter Hard (¼H) Stainless Steel 301 Strip
Quarter hard is the temper we quote when a stamping shop wants more spring-back resistance than annealed gives but still needs to form the part in one hit. ASTM A666 sets 860 MPa tensile and 515 MPa yield minimum, with 25% elongation and hardness around 25 HRC. Springback is noticeable on the press compared with soft strip, so tooling usually needs a small overbend allowance built in. It runs well into clips, light spring washers, and formed retaining components where the bend radius stays generous.
Half Hard (½H) Stainless Steel 301 Strip
At 1035 MPa minimum tensile and 760 MPa yield, half hard is the common middle ground for spring work that still involves forming. Elongation drops to 18% and hardness sits near 32 HRC, which means bends want to run across the rolling direction wherever the drawing allows. Hose clamps, seat springs, and snap rings are the volume items we slit in this condition. Our slitting lines produce a cleaner burr at half hard than at annealed, since harder strip shears rather than tears at the knife.
Three-Quarter Hard (¾H) Stainless Steel 301 Strip
Three-quarter hard covers the gap where full hard is too brittle and half hard too soft. The A666 minima are 1205 MPa tensile and 930 MPa yield at 12% elongation, with typical hardness around 37 HRC. Forming is limited to gentle bends and simple profiles; anything with a tight inner radius should be requoted a temper down. We see it specified for constant-force springs and structural clips where load capacity matters more than shape complexity.
Full Hard Stainless Steel 301 Strip
Full hard delivers the maximum rolled strength for this grade, 1275 MPa tensile and 965 MPa yield minimum under A666, with 9% elongation and hardness near 41 HRC. Coil set is pronounced at this temper, and narrow slit widths can show camber, so we hold flatness checks on the line before packing. It goes into spring steel bands, spiral-wound gasket windings, and blade-type contacts that must return to shape over millions of cycles. If the part needs full hard strength but also a formed feature with guaranteed elongation, the honest answer is to move the bend to a secondary operation or split the assembly, since no rolled temper gives both.
