Stainless Steel 410 shims are precision-slit martensitic spacers carrying 11.50 to 13.50% chromium and 0.08 to 0.15% carbon. That carbon floor is the point: unlike austenitic or ferritic shim grades, a 410 SS shim hardens by quenching and tempering, so a spacer fitted soft can later be treated to resist wear. The grade is strongly magnetic, and its low nickel content keeps it among the cost-effective stainless steel shims options.
