What are Stainless Steel 310S Shims?

Stainless Steel 310S shims are thin, flat spacers slit from 310S, a low-carbon austenitic grade built around 25% chromium and 20% nickel. The carbon ceiling of 0.08% curbs carbide precipitation, so the metal keeps its structure through long spells at high temperature. AISI 310S resists oxidation and scaling in continuous service up to roughly 1050 °C. Fabricators fit use Stainless Steel shims wherever a precise gap must survive heat: between furnace plates, under burner mounts, and inside heat-exchanger stacks.

We slit every 310S shim in-house on our own lines rather than reselling fixed widths. Stock leaves the plant in annealed soft condition to ASTM A240, in any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm, with BA, 2B, Matte, or Scotch-Brite surfaces. A documented quality system tracks each coil from incoming inspection to dispatch, and mill test certificates follow on request.

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 310S Shims

Chromium at 24 to 26% builds the oxide film that gives 310S its heat resistance, while 19 to 22% nickel holds the austenite stable across the working range. The full ASTM A240 composition for AISI 310S shims appears below.

Element Composition (%)
Carbon (C) 0.08 max
Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.045 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Silicon (Si) 1.50 max
Chromium (Cr) 24.0-26.0
Nickel (Ni) 19.0-22.0

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 310S Shims

Annealed 310S austenitic stainless steel shims pair a 515 MPa minimum tensile strength with 40% elongation, so the material forms and punches without cracking. Values for gauges under 0.5 mm are indicative rather than tested to the standard.

Property Value
Tensile Strength, minimum
515 MPa (75 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
205 MPa (30 ksi)
Hardness (max)
217 HBW / 95 HRB
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
40%

Equivalent Designation of Stainless Steel 310S Shims

International buyers can cross-reference UNS S31008 shims against their regional standard using the table below. Our 310S shim stock matches every designation listed here, from 1.4845 shims in Europe to SUS 310S shims in Japan.

Country / Standard Designation
USA (UNS) S31008
Europe (EN) X8CrNi25-21
Germany (W.Nr) 1.4845
Japan (JIS) SUS310S
China (GB) 06Cr25Ni20
Russia (GOST) 10Х23Н18

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 310S Shims

5 industries use the 310S shim stock we slit. In each, buyers pick the grade for high-temperature oxidation resistance and dimensional stability rather than room-temperature strength.

Stainless Steel 310S Shims used in Furnace and Heat-Treatment Equipment

Furnace and Heat-Treatment Equipment

Furnace builders use 310S shims around muffle joints, hearth plates, and burner mounts. The 25-20 stainless structure resists scaling near 1050 °C, so spacers hold their thickness through heating cycles that would warp lower-alloy steel.

Stainless Steel 310S Shims used in Petrochemical and Chemical Processing

Petrochemical and Chemical Processing

Refinery and reformer assemblies use SS 310S shims where oxidising and carburising gases attack ordinary spacers. The grade resists sulphidation and keeps its strength at temperature, holding flange gaps aligned across long production runs.

Stainless Steel 310S Shims used in Power Generation and Boiler Components

Power Generation and Boiler Components

Boiler and superheater assemblies rely on 310S shim stock for baffle spacing and tube-support alignment. High chromium limits oxide growth on hot surfaces, and the shims stay dimensionally stable under sustained thermal load.

Stainless Steel 310S Shims used in Cement, Glass, and Kiln Applications

Cement, Glass, and Kiln Applications

Kiln hoods, calciner supports, and glass-furnace fittings run above 1000 °C for weeks together. Alloy 310S shims tolerate that duty, resisting oxidation and the abrasive dust of cement and glass lines.

Stainless Steel 310S Shims used in Gasket and Heat-Exchanger Components

Gasket and Heat-Exchanger Components

Heat-exchanger builders set 310S shims as precision spacers and thin gasket layers between hot mating faces. A shim slit to ±0.1 mm seats without trimming, so technicians fix clearances accurately during assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness range is available for Stainless Steel 310S Shims?

We slit Stainless Steel 310S shim stock from 0.03 mm to 5 mm thick, in any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm. Gauges below 0.03 mm fall under our Stainless Steel 310S foil range.

What is the maximum service temperature for 310S Shim stock?

310S shim stock offers strong oxidation and scaling resistance in continuous service up to approximately 1050 °C. That heat tolerance suits furnace, kiln, and heat-treatment spacing, where lower-alloy spacers would scale.

Can Stainless Steel 310S Shims be custom slit to specific widths?

Yes. We precision-slit SS 310S shims to any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm, holding a width tolerance of ±0.1 mm, so each spacer arrives ready to fit.

What surface finishes are available on SS 310S Shims?

We supply SS310S shims in BA (bright annealed), 2B, Matte, and Scotch-Brite finishes. Slit, mill, deburred, or round edges suit winding and gasket work.

What is the lead time for Stainless Steel 310S Shims?

Standard dispatch runs 4 to 5 working days from our Mumbai and Taloja warehouses. Urgent orders can leave in 2 to 3 days, subject to the slitting schedule.
