What are Stainless Steel 430 Foils?

Stainless Steel 430 foil is ultra-thin ferritic stainless rolled to gauges below 0.08 mm, carrying 16 to 18% chromium and under 0.75% nickel. Heat treatment will not harden it, so the grade takes temper by cold rolling and softens again on annealing. It stays magnetic in every condition. Chromium grows a passive oxide skin that resists mild atmospheres, hot water, and nitric acid, while low nickel keeps costs down. Engineers reach for these stainless steel foils where a thin, magnetic, corrosion-resisting layer matters more than strength.

As a reliable Stainless Steel 430 Foil supplier and manufacturer, we slit each foil in-house rather than reselling standard coil. Material ships annealed and soft to ASTM A240 in any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm, with a choice of BA, 2B, Matte, and Matte PVC surface and slit, deburred, or round edges.

Chemical Composition of SS 430 Foils

Chromium at 16 to 18% carries this grade, building the passive oxide film behind 430's corrosion and oxidation resistance. Nickel stays below 0.75% to hold costs down. The ASME SA-240 limits follow.

Element Composition (% by weight)
Carbon (C) 0.12 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Silicon (Si) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.040 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Chromium (Cr) 16.00 to 18.00
Nickel (Ni) 0.75 max
Iron (Fe) Balance

Mechanical Properties of AISI 430 Foils

Annealed 430 foil reaches a 450 MPa minimum tensile strength with 22% elongation, and being non-hardenable, it ships soft only. The A240 elongation value applies above 0.38 mm and remains indicative on thinner foil.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
450 MPa (65 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
22%
Hardness, maximum

Industrial Applications of 430 Stainless Steel Foils

These 5 industries specify the 430 stainless steel foil we manufacture. Each buyer selects the grade for corrosion resistance, magnetic response, or a bright surface at a cost well under austenitic foil.

Stainless Steel 430 Foils used in Automotive Components

Automotive Components

Car makers press 430 foil into trim inlays, reflector backings, and heat-shield laminates. The bright surface holds its shine without plating, and chromium above 16% shrugs off road salt. Thin gauge trims weight, and the ferritic structure keeps parts magnetic for sensor fixings.

Stainless Steel 430 Foils used in Kitchen and Household Appliances

Kitchen and Household Appliances

Appliance builders wrap 430 foil around oven liners, toaster cavities, and cooker trims. The grade takes a mirror or brushed finish, resists steam and mild detergents, and stays magnetic for induction bases. At a fraction of Type 304's cost, it suits visible surfaces meeting moderate moisture.

Stainless Steel 430 Foils used in Food Processing Equipment

Food Processing Equipment

Food and catering fabricators use 430 foil as shelving liners, splash panels, and equipment facings. The passive chromium film keeps the surface non-tainting through hot alkaline wash cycles. Where chloride exposure stays low, 430 handles daily contact without the nickel cost of austenitic grades.

Stainless Steel 430 Foils used in Architectural and Decorative Uses

Architectural and Decorative Uses

Architectural workshops apply 430 foil to lift-car panels, signage faces, and column cladding inside dry interiors. The reflective finish suits feature surfaces, and low nickel content keeps large-area work affordable. Thin foil laminates onto board and honeycomb, giving a steel face at light weight.

Stainless Steel 430 Foils used in Electromagnetic Shielding and Electronics

Electromagnetic Shielding and Electronics

Electronics assemblers use 430 foil for shielding cans, gaskets, and relay laminations because the grade is ferritic and magnetically soft. It channels magnetic flux and screens low-frequency fields that non-magnetic 304 cannot. Slit to ±0.1 mm, the foil stacks into cores without edge burr.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness and width range do you offer for SS 430 Foils?

We roll SS 430 foils from 0.03 mm to 0.08 mm thick and slit them to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm, held to ±0.1 mm on width.

Is SS 430 Foil magnetic?

Yes. Grade 430 is a ferritic stainless steel, so the foil responds to a magnet in every condition, including after cold rolling and forming. That behaviour suits it for shielding and induction work.

What is the difference between 304 and 430 Stainless Steel Foil?

The difference between 430 and SS 304 foil is that 430 foil is ferritic, magnetic, and nickel-free, so it costs less and resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking. 304 foil is austenitic with 8 to 10.5% nickel, non-magnetic, and holds up better against a wider range of acids.

What surface finishes are available for 430 SS Foils?

We supply 430 foil in BA (Bright Annealed), 2B, Matte, and Matte PVC finishes. The choice depends on whether you need a mirror face, a dull surface for coating, or a protected finish for handling.

What is the maximum service temperature for 430 Stainless Steel Foil?

Grade 430 resists oxidation up to about 815°C in continuous service and around 870°C intermittently. Above these points, scaling accelerates, so heat-shield parts stay within the continuous limit.
