What are Monel 400 Coils?

Monel 400 coils are continuous flat-rolled lengths of nickel-copper alloy wound for slitting and onward fabrication. The grade carries 63.0% minimum nickel with 28.0 to 34.0% copper, a pairing that withstands seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and caustic alkalis. UNS N04400 is a solid-solution alloy; heat treatment won't harden it, only cold work does. Ductility holds from cryogenic temperatures up to about 480 °C, with a density of 8.8 g/cm³. These coils are commonly used in the marine, oil and gas, and chemical industries.

We supply these Monel coils from our own slitting lines, cutting any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm. Material leaves annealed to ASTM B127 in a choice of finishes and edges, with a test certificate covering every dispatch.

Chemical Composition of Monel 400 Coils

Copper sets this grade apart from most nickel alloys. UNS N04400 coils pair 28.0 to 34.0% copper with a 63.0% nickel floor, the pairing behind its resistance to reducing acids. The nominal composition of UNS N04400 to ASTM B127 appears below.

Element Composition (%)
Nickel (plus cobalt) 63.0 min
Copper (Cu) 28.0 to 34.0
Iron (Fe) 2.50 max
Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max
Carbon (C) 0.30 max
Silicon (Si) 0.50 max
Sulphur (S) 0.024 max

Mechanical Properties of Monel 400 Coils

Annealed Monel Alloy 400 coil meets a 485 MPa minimum tensile strength with 35% elongation, so it slits, presses, and deep-draws readily. Yield minimums apply at the qualifying gauge; figures below 0.51 mm stay indicative, since ASTM B127's yield requirements do not apply under that thickness.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
485 MPa (70 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
195 MPa (28 ksi)
Elongation in 50.8 mm (2 in.), minimum
35%

Industrial Applications of Monel 400 Coils

These four industries widely use the Monel coils we slit. Each one picks the grade for corrosion performance in chloride or reducing media rather than for raw strength.

Monel 400 Coils used in Marine and Offshore

Marine and Offshore

Shipyards and offshore contractors use Monel 400 coil in pump sleeves, fastener stock, and splash-zone sheathing. The alloy resists flowing seawater and chloride stress corrosion cracking, so parts keep their section in saline service that pits stainless steel. In stagnant seawater, fouling and localised pitting can occur, so flowing service suits the grade best.

Monel 400 Coils used in Chemical Processing

Chemical Processing

Chemical plants convert Monel 400 coils into heat exchanger strips, vessel linings, and heating coils for caustic duty. The nickel-copper matrix resists the hydrofluoric and sulphuric acid streams that strip lesser alloys, and sodium hydroxide is handled across a wide concentration range.

Monel 400 Coils used in Oil and Gas

Oil and Gas

Oil and gas operators form Alloy 400 coil into valve trim, instrument components, and downhole sealing parts for sour wells. Monel 400 is among the alloys listed for sour service under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, and slit widths feed forming and machining lines directly.

Monel 400 Coils used in Desalination and Water Treatment

Desalination and Water Treatment

Desalination plants specify UNS N04400 coil for evaporator parts, brine heater components, and intake screens in hot, chloride-heavy water. Resistance to chloride cracking keeps this hardware running between overhaul cycles, which matters wherever an unplanned shutdown drains plant output.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness and width range is available for Monel 400 Coils?

We supply Monel 400 coils from 0.03 mm to 5 mm thick and slit to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm, held to ±0.1 mm on narrow slit widths. Coil ID runs 150 mm to 610 mm, with OD up to 1800 mm.

Can Monel 400 Coils be used as heating coils in corrosive environments?

Yes, Monel 400 coils serve as heating elements in caustic soda and hydrofluoric acid duty. Resistance to alkalis and reducing acids keeps elements intact where stainless heating surfaces fail early. For hypochlorite duty, a nickel-chromium-molybdenum grade such as Hastelloy C276 is the correct choice instead.

What is the lead time for Monel 400 Coil orders?

The lead time for Monel 400 coil orders is 4 to 5 days from ready stock. Urgent dispatch leaves in 2 to 3 days.

What is the price of Monel 400 Coils per kg?

The price of Monel 400 coils per kg is around ₹1,700 to ₹3,000 in India, or roughly $20 to $35 for export buyers. The final figure moves with thickness, width, finish, quantity, and LME rates.
