What are Stainless Steel 321 Strips?

Stainless Steel 321 strips are flat-rolled lengths of a titanium-stabilised austenitic chromium-nickel grade. The alloy carries 17.0-19.0% chromium and 9.0-12.0% nickel. Titanium, added at five times the combined carbon and nitrogen content or more, locks up carbon before it forms chromium carbides at grain boundaries. The strip therefore resists intergranular corrosion through the ~815 °C sensitisation range, where unstabilised grades weaken after welding. These strips are used in aerospace and heat exchangers.

We slit every 321 strip on our own Mumbai lines rather than trading mill widths. The grade is at the high-temperature end of our stainless steel strips range. Buyers pick any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm, in annealed condition, with BA, 2B, Scotch-Brite, Matte, Matte PVC, or HR pickled surfaces. Every coil ships with its full test documentation.

Specifications of Stainless Steel 321 Strips

Chemical Composition of SS 321 Strips

Titanium is the key stabilising element in this grade. 321 SS strips hold it at 5x(C+N) minimum to 0.70% maximum, which keeps chromium carbides from precipitating in welds and hot service. The complete ASME SA-240 limits follow.

Element Composition (%)
Carbon (C) 0.08 max
Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.045 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Silicon (Si) 0.75 max
Chromium (Cr) 17.0 - 19.0
Nickel (Ni) 9.0 - 12.0
Titanium (Ti) 5x(C+N) min, 0.70 max
Nitrogen (N) 0.10 max
Iron (Fe) Balance

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 321 Strips

Type 321 strips in annealed condition deliver 515 MPa minimum tensile strength with 40% minimum elongation, so the material draws and bends without cracking. We supply 321 strip in the annealed (soft) temper only.

Property Value
Tensile Strength, minimum
515 MPa (75 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
40%

Industrial Applications of SS 321 Strips

These 4 industries consume most of the 321 stainless steel strips we slit. Each one picks the grade for steady service between 425 °C and 870 °C, a range that damages leaner austenitic alloys.

Stainless Steel 321 Strips used in Automotive and Exhaust Systems

Automotive and Exhaust Systems

Exhaust system makers form 321 Stainless Steel Winding Strip into flexible bellows, manifold heat shields, and flex-coupling liners. Gas temperatures cycle past 800 °C near the manifold, and titanium stabilisation keeps weld seams carbide-free. Gauges down to 0.03 mm suit multi-ply bellows construction.

Stainless Steel 321 Strips used in Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Process plants run 321 Stainless Steel Slit Coil in expansion joints, spiral-wound gasket windings, and sealing rings around reformers and fired heaters. Type 321 keeps its grain boundaries intact through repeated shutdowns, so joints don't work loose over years of thermal cycling.

Stainless Steel 321 Strips used in Aerospace and High-Temperature Equipment

Aerospace and High-Temperature Equipment

Aircraft fabricators specify AMS 5510 material for exhaust cones, firewalls, and engine bay shrouds, where the grade holds useful strength up to 870 °C without adding weight. We slit aerospace orders to the same ±0.1 mm width tolerance as industrial orders.

Stainless Steel 321 Strips used in Heat Exchanger and Boiler Components

Heat Exchanger and Boiler Components

Heat exchanger fabricators wrap tube bundles with a slit 321 strip and punch baffle seals or spacer bands from a wider coil. Boiler builders fit the same material around economiser casings. Creep resistance matters more than hardness here; annealed strip holds shape under sustained load.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Stainless Steel 321 Strips used for?

Stainless Steel 321 strips are used for exhaust bellows, expansion joints, engine gaskets, heat exchanger elements, and chemical plant seals. The grade suits components serving continuously ~815 °C.

Is 321 Stainless Steel Strip better than 304 Strip for high-temperature use?

Yes, 321 stainless steel strip is better than 304 strip for high-temperature use. Its titanium content prevents carbide formation in the ~815 °C, so it resists intergranular corrosion where 304 sensitises.

What thickness and width are available for SS 321 Strips?

SS 321 strips are available from 0.03 mm to 5 mm thickness and 3 mm to 2000 mm width, slit within ±0.1 mm.

What is the price of SS 321 Strips per kg?

The price of SS 321 strips per kg sits around ₹210-₹290 in India and $2.5-$4/kg for export buyers. Send us your thickness, width, and quantity for an exact rate.

Do you supply SS 321 Strips with test certificates?

Yes, we supply SS 321 strips with EN 10204 Type 3.1 and 3.2 certificates on request, backed by technical data sheets covering the full material properties.
