What are Inconel 625 Shims?

Inconel 625 shims are thin, precision-slit spacers of a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium superalloy carrying 58% minimum nickel. Molybdenum and niobium stiffen the matrix in solid solution, so the material needs no ageing treatment. A shim in this grade retains mechanical strength and dimensional stability to about 980°C and resists pitting, crevice attack, and chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Engineers fit them wherever alignment must survive corrosion and temperature together. Inconel 625 shims are typically used for high-temperature, corrosion-resistant alignment in marine and chemical processing equipment.

Temper Conditions of Inconel 625 Shims

Temper describes how much cold rolling a shim has taken after annealing, which sets its strength and how it holds thickness under a clamped load. We supply Inconel 625 shims in a Solution Annealed condition and in five cold-rolled hard tempers, each rolled to a tensile range we agree with the customer at the order stage and certify on the EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 mill test certificate. These cold-worked tempers are mill tempers rather than standardised conditions, so the certified figures come from the reduction agreed at order. The sections below cover the six conditions we slit and the work each one goes into.

Solution Annealed Inconel 625 Shims

Solution Annealed shim stock solves the complaint we hear most about hard shims: packs that will not sit down on an uneven face. The annealed stock we supply is certified at 827 to 1030 MPa tensile and 88 to 95 HRB. Our customers cut it into laminated peel-off sets and conform it to steelwork that has some waviness left in it. We interleave narrow coils with paper on the slitting line, since the burr at this temper is soft enough to mark the wrap below it.

Quarter Hard Inconel 625 Shims

We produce this temper with a light cold reduction that lifts tensile strength to 930 to 1100 MPa, reading 98 HRB to 22 HRC, while keeping enough ductility for gentle forming. We roll it as a mill temper to the tensile range fixed at order, verified by tensile test on the certificate. It suits customers who find shim stock too slack to survive handling but know full stiffness would fight their die. We supply it for machine alignment packs, light flat springs, and blanked shims that must stay flat between the press and the assembly bay.

Half Hard Inconel 625 Shims

Half hard suits customers who want a shim to hold its set thickness under bolt load rather than compress into the joint. We roll it to 1030 to 1170 MPa and 22 to 30 HRC, a heavier cold reduction than quarter hard, confirmed on the first-off certificate. Turbine assemblers take this condition for seal land and casing shims where creep in the pack would open a clearance. Forming is limited to gentle bends on a generous radius, and at widths below about 10 mm we watch camber closely on the slitting line.

Three-Quarter Hard Inconel 625 Shims

Our customers specify this condition at 1100 to 1280 MPa and 28 to 34 HRC for shims loaded in shear or carrying a repeated bearing stress, such as those under bearing pedestals and valve yokes. We cold roll it towards the upper end of what stays workable, to the range agreed on the order. At this hardness the shim is a flat-blanked part and nothing more, so when a drawing shows a formed tab we steer the order back towards a softer temper. Buyers sometimes ask for this condition near the top of our 5 mm thickness range, where heavy cold reduction is not practical and solution-annealed plate is the correct call instead.

Hard Inconel 625 Shims

When a design calls for high yield in a thin section, we roll hard temper shim stock towards 1240 to 1380 MPa at 33 to 40 HRC, fixed against the order. Subsea connector make-up and valve trim spacing both take this condition, because the joint is cycled and the set clearance has to survive it. Corrosion performance is certified against the solution annealed condition. For heavily cold-worked material in aggressive service, confirm the application with our technical team. Coil set is stubborn at this temper, so thin gauges need careful uncoiling before blanking.

Full Hard Inconel 625 Shims

Full hard is the stiffest condition we slit, running 1350 to 1520 MPa and 38 to 45 HRC, produced for machine feet, riser clamps, and thruster mounts where the pack must not compress across an outage interval. It is a mill temper, and its strength figures come from the cold reduction agreed at order rather than from a published property table. Burr behaviour changes at full hard, so we set slitting clearances tighter to keep edges clean on narrow widths. We do not supply this temper for forming work, and where a specification insists on a standards-backed hard temper with guaranteed elongation, a 301 stainless shim is the honest recommendation.
