What are Inconel 718 Foils?

Inconel 718 foils are thin-gauge flat products of a nickel-chromium superalloy that hardens through a solution treat and age cycle instead of cold work alone. Niobium at 4.75 to 5.50% forms gamma double-prime precipitates during ageing, lifting tensile strength past 1240 MPa. This specialised Inconel foil holds that strength to about 650 °C and carries a density of 8.19 g/cm³, which suits thin seals, gaskets, heat shields, and high-speed Inconel 718 foil air bearings inside engines.

As a premier Inconel 718 foil supplier, we hold stock solution annealed, so fabricators can etch, draw, or form the foil first; it doesn't reach full hardness until the ageing step.

Chemical Composition of Inconel 718 Foils

Alloy 718 foil owes its age-hardening response to niobium, supported by titanium and aluminium. The full ASTM B670 limits for UNS N07718 appear below.

Mechanical Properties of Inconel 718 Foils

Heat treatment decides the strength of 718 foil. AMS 5596 covers the solution annealed condition, providing tensile strength of 830-965 MPa while remaining suitable for forming operations. AMS 5597 covers solution treated and aged material, where precipitation raises tensile strength to 1240 MPa minimum with 1035 MPa yield and 36 to 42 HRC. The spring temper row is indicative and certified per order.

Condition Tensile Strength (MPa) Yield Strength (0.2% Offset) Rockwell Hardness
Solution Annealed
830 to 965 380 MPa 100 HRB max
Precipitation Hardened (Aged)
1240 min 1035 MPa 36 to 42 HRC
Cold Rolled Spring Temper
1240 to 1585 Certified per order 40 to 42 HRC

Industrial Applications of Inconel 718 Foils

Inconel 718 alloy foil serves wherever a thin section must carry load through heat. These 4 industries buy most of the foil we slit.

Inconel 718 Foils used in Aerospace and Defence

Aerospace and Defence

Engine builders shape IN718 foil into thermal liners, exhaust gaskets, heat shields, and shim layers for turbine blade gap adjustment. We supply this high-performance material to AMS 5596 in the solution annealed state for high ductility and formability for complex fabrication and deep drawing.

Inconel 718 Foils used in Power Generation

Power Generation

Gas turbine seals, heat exchanger baffles, and shielding layers utilise our Inconel alloy 718 - heat-resistant alloy foil for its exceptional creep resistance in combustion atmospheres. The alloy maintains dimensional stability during prolonged operating campaigns, even at gauges under 0.1 mm.

Inconel 718 Foils used in Oil, Gas, and Chemical Processing

Oil, Gas, and Chemical Processing

Instrumentation diaphragms, valve sealing layers, and corrosion-resistant gaskets are cut from Alloy 718 foil for sour-service duty. The aged material resists sulphide stress cracking in well fluids, where stainless foil fails early.

Inconel 718 Foils used in General Engineering

General Engineering

Flat springs, bellows, and filter elements use spring-temper 718 foil where vibration and heat defeat standard spring steel. Precision equipment makers also order annealed foil for etched and formed miniature parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness range is available for Inconel 718 Foils?

Inconel 718 foils are available from 0.03 mm to 0.08 mm thick and 3 mm to 2000 mm wide, slit on our own lines to ±0.1 mm.

Which standards cover Inconel 718 Foils?

Inconel 718 foils are covered by ASTM B670, with AMS 5597 for solution treated and aged material and AMS 5596 for annealed aerospace supply, all under UNS N07718.

How do Inconel 718 Foils reach full strength?

Inconel 718 foils reach full strength through a solution treat and age cycle. Ageing precipitates gamma double-prime, which lifts tensile strength past 1240 MPa at 36 to 42 HRC.

Can Inconel 718 Foils be custom slit to specific widths?

Yes, we slit Inconel 718 foils to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm at ±0.1 mm. Custom width slitting is our core in-house service.

What is the maximum service temperature for Inconel 718 Foils?

The maximum continuous service temperature for Inconel 718 foils is about 650 °C. The alloy also stays tough down to cryogenic temperatures.

What is the price of Inconel 718 Foils per kg?

Inconel 718 foils in India typically cost around ₹3,000-₹3,500 per kg, while export buyers generally pay about $35-$46 per kg, depending on thickness and finish for export, subject to gauge, temper, and market movement.
