254SMO stainless steel coils are flat-rolled lengths of super austenitic stainless steel, wound for slitting and onward fabrication, containing approximately 20% chromium, 18% nickel, 6% molybdenum, copper, and 0.2% nitrogen. That chemistry lifts the pitting resistance equivalent number above 40, so the grade holds its passive film in warm seawater and hot chloride streams that perforate 316L. Density sits at 8.0 g/cm³. They are typically used in seawater handling equipment, chemical processing vessels, pulp bleaching systems, and offshore oil platforms.

Annealed UNS S31254 coils meet a 650 MPa minimum tensile strength with 35% elongation, and the yield floor runs near double that of 304 or 316. Nitrogen makes the strip work-harden quickly during forming. Yield minimums are specified for gauges 0.50 mm and above; thinner gauges are indicative.
