What are SMO 254 Coils?

254SMO stainless steel coils are flat-rolled lengths of super austenitic stainless steel, wound for slitting and onward fabrication, containing approximately 20% chromium, 18% nickel, 6% molybdenum, copper, and 0.2% nitrogen. That chemistry lifts the pitting resistance equivalent number above 40, so the grade holds its passive film in warm seawater and hot chloride streams that perforate 316L. Density sits at 8.0 g/cm³. They are typically used in seawater handling equipment, chemical processing vessels, pulp bleaching systems, and offshore oil platforms.

As a reliable 254SMO coil supplier, we stock these coils, sourcing material from reputed primary mills and slitting any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm on our own lines. Coils are issued annealed to ASTM A240 with 2B, BA surfaces, and a mill test certificate covers every dispatch upon request.

Specifications of SMO 254 Coils

Chemical Composition of SMO 254 Coils

Two additions carry this grade. Molybdenum at 6.00 to 6.50% shuts down chloride pitting, while 0.180 to 0.220% nitrogen strengthens the austenite and lifts the PREN above 40. Full ASTM A240 limits appear below.

Element Composition (%)
Carbon (C) 0.020 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.030 max
Sulphur (S) 0.010 max
Silicon (Si) 0.80 max
Chromium (Cr) 19.50 to 20.50
Nickel (Ni) 17.50 to 18.50
Molybdenum (Mo) 6.00 to 6.50
Copper (Cu) 0.50 to 1.00
Nitrogen (N) 0.180 to 0.220

Mechanical Properties of SMO 254 Coils

Annealed UNS S31254 coils meet a 650 MPa minimum tensile strength with 35% elongation, and the yield floor runs near double that of 304 or 316. Nitrogen makes the strip work-harden quickly during forming. Yield minimums are specified for gauges 0.50 mm and above; thinner gauges are indicative.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
650 MPa (94 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
300 MPa (44 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
35%
Density

Industrial Applications of SMO 254 Coils

These 4 industries use most of the 6Mo coils we supply. Each one buys the grade for pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride service rather than for price.

SMO 254 Coils used in Chemical Processing

Chemical Processing

Chemical plants convert SMO 254 coil into heat exchanger strips, vessel linings, and gasket stock for hot acid and chloride duty. The copper addition makes it useful in sulphuric acid streams. Where 316 pits through in months, this grade keeps its section and stretches maintenance intervals.

SMO 254 Coils used in Desalination and Seawater Handling

Desalination and Seawater Handling

Seawater sets the benchmark for this alloy. Desalination and coastal power plants form 254 SMO coils into evaporator parts, intake components, and heat recovery hardware carrying hot, high-chloride brine. In independent erosion-corrosion testing in sand-laden salt water, the grade recorded the highest critical flow velocity among six stainless steels.

SMO 254 Coils used in Pulp and Paper Bleaching

Pulp and Paper Bleaching

Chlorine dioxide bleaching liquor corrodes ordinary stainless quickly. Mills specify UNS S31254 coils for washer drums, seals, and bleach-tower hardware exposed to warm, acidic, chloride-bearing media. The stable passive film stays thin and coil serviceable, whereas standard austenitics don't last a campaign.

SMO 254 Coils used in Flue Gas Desulphurisation and Energy

Flue Gas Desulphurisation and Energy

Power stations line FGD scrubbers and ducting with 254 SMO coil because the alloy passivates reliably in the acidic, chloride-heavy condensate those systems generate.

SMO 254 Coils Price

SMO 254 coils in India are generally priced around ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 per kg, while export buyers typically pay about $17 to $35 per kg. Treat these figures as indicative; the rate tracks nickel and molybdenum surcharges, and thickness, width, finish, and quantity all move it. Call or WhatsApp us for today's rate.
