What is Stainless Steel 441 Foil?

Stainless Steel 441 foil is a thin-gauge ferritic stainless steel holding around 18% chromium, stabilised twice over with titanium and niobium. Both additions bind carbon and nitrogen, so welded joints keep their corrosion resistance with no post-weld anneal. Mills developed the grade for automotive exhaust hot ends, where it resists scaling to roughly 950 °C in cyclic service. The metal is ferromagnetic, doesn't respond to hardening heat treatment, and has a density of 7.7 g/cm³.

Every metre of stainless steel foil we sell as a stainless steel 441 foil supplier and manufacturer gets dispatched from our own slitting lines. Supply condition is annealed soft only, since 441 carries no hardness temper ladder. Buyers pick any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm, with BA, 2B, matte PVC, and matte surfaces.

Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel 441 Foils

Niobium separates Grade 441 Foil from single-stabilised ferritics. Paired with titanium, it pins carbon at grain boundaries and raises hot strength. ASTM A240 limits for UNS S44100 appear below.

Element Composition (% by weight)
Carbon (C) 0.030 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max
Phosphorus (P) 0.040 max
Sulphur (S) 0.030 max
Silicon (Si) 1.00 max
Chromium (Cr) 17.50 to 19.50
Nickel (Ni) 1.00 max
Titanium (Ti) 0.10 to 0.50
Niobium (Nb) 0.3 + 3x(C) min to 1.00 max
Nitrogen (N) 0.030 max
Iron (Fe) Balance

Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 441 Foils

Press shops order Type 441 Stainless Steel Foil for its balance of strength and formability. Annealed material pairs a 415 MPa minimum tensile strength with 22% elongation, so it stamps and folds without cracking. Below 0.38 mm gauge, treat elongation as indicative.

Property Value (Annealed)
Tensile Strength, minimum
415 MPa (60 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
22%
Hardness, maximum

Industrial Applications of Stainless Steel 441 Foils

These 4 industries use most of the Alloy 441 Foil, leaving our slitting lines. Each one selects the grade for weldable stabilised chemistry and scaling resistance near 950 °C at ferritic cost.

Stainless Steel 441 Foils used in Automotive Exhaust Components

Automotive Exhaust Components

Exhaust system builders wind Alloy 441 Foil into flexible coupling liners, heat shields, and manifold wraps. Hot-end duty is what the chemistry was built for: the foil cycles to roughly 950 °C without heavy scaling, and its thermal expansion is about a third below austenitic grades, so clamped joints stay tight.

Stainless Steel 441 Foils used in Domestic Appliances and Kitchen Equipment

Domestic Appliances and Kitchen Equipment

Appliance manufacturers utilise SS 441 foil in oven liners, flue components, and hob trim. A bright annealed surface forms without orange peel at shallow draws. Because the grade contains no deliberate nickel, part costs stay flat when nickel prices swing, which matters on high-volume white goods lines.

Stainless Steel 441 Foils used in Heat Exchangers and Gaskets

Heat Exchangers and Gaskets

Thin-gauge 441 stainless foil is used in heat exchanger fins and the winding strip of spiral-wound gaskets. Corrugating demands ductility, and the 22% minimum elongation provides it. In recuperators running hot exhaust against fresh air, the grade's oxidation resistance keeps fin edges intact at a cost austenitic foil cannot meet.

Stainless Steel 441 Foils used in Sensor and Electronic Housings

Sensor and Electronic Housings

Sensor and instrumentation firms draw 441 SS foil into exhaust gas sensor housings, thermocouple sheaths, and shielding cans near the manifold. The material welds predictably, stays magnetic for position sensing, and tolerates under-bonnet heat that unstabilised ferritic foil handles poorly. Slitting to ±0.1 mm gives presses a consistent blank.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness range is available for SS 441 Foils?

We slit SS 441 foils from 0.03 mm to 0.08 mm, in widths anywhere between 3 mm and 2000 mm, with width dimensions held to ±0.1 mm.

How does SS 441 foil differ from SS 430 Foil?

SS 441 carries titanium and niobium as stabilisers, while SS 430 carries neither, so 441 Stainless Foil resists intergranular corrosion after welding and holds strength further up the temperature scale.

Can 441 Stainless Steel Foil be welded?

Yes, 441 foil welds cleanly. The two stabilising elements lock up carbon and nitrogen, so the heat-affected zone stays ductile and corrosion resistant with no post-weld anneal.

Is 441 Stainless Foil a substitute for 304 Foil?

In dry heat and exhaust-type service, 441 stainless foil replaces 304 at a lower cost because it's nickel-free. It gives up some ductility and toughness, so severe deep-draw work still favours the austenitic grade.

Does SS441 Foil handle temperatures above 900 °C?

SS441 foil resists scaling to roughly 950 °C in cyclic, exhaust-type service, which is why the grade dominates hot-end exhaust work.

Where can I source SS 441 Foils in India?

You can source SS 441 foils in India directly from us at Riddhi Siddhi Impex. Our Mumbai and Taloja warehouses hold ferritic foil stock, and get a quote 24 hours.
