Monel 400 shims are thin, flat spacers slit from a nickel-copper alloy holding 63.0% minimum nickel and 28.0 to 34.0% copper. This solid-solution grade is not hardenable by heat treatment, so it gains strength only through cold work. The high nickel and copper content resists hydrofluoric acid, seawater, and reducing conditions that attack stainless steel. Fitters place these shims wherever a gap must be set accurately, between flanges, under pump housings, and inside valve assemblies. These Monel Shims are specified in power generation and marine applications.

Material leaves in soft annealed condition to ASTM B127, in any width from 3 mm to 2000 mm. Buyers can specify BA, 2B, or Matte surfaces with slit, deburred, or round edges.
