What are Monel 400 Strips?

Monel 400 strips are thin, cold-rolled sections of a nickel-copper alloy holding 63.0% minimum nickel and 28.0 to 34.0% copper. This solid-solution grade is not hardenable by heat treatment, so it gains strength through cold work. The high nickel and copper content resists hydrofluoric acid, seawater, and reducing conditions that attack stainless steel. UNS N04400 also keeps its ductility to subzero temperatures, which suits springs and formed parts.

We process every Nickel-Copper Alloy 400 strip in-house on our own slitting lines. Material leaves in soft annealed condition to ASTM B127, slit to any width between 3 mm and 2000 mm. You can specify BA, 2B, or Matte surfaces with slit, deburred, or round edges. A mill test certificate ships with every order.

Specifications of Monel 400 Strips

We provide ASTM B127 Monel 400 strips in soft annealed condition, in thicknesses from 0.03 mm to 5 mm and precision-slit widths from 3 mm to 2000 mm, with a choice of finishes and edges.

Chemical Composition of Monel 400 Strips

Nickel and copper define this grade. Monel 400 slitting coil carries at least 63.0% nickel with 28.0 to 34.0% copper, and this pairing gives the alloy its resistance to reducing acids and seawater. The full composition to ASTM B127 appears below.

Element Composition (%)
Nickel (Ni) 63.0 min
Copper (Cu) 28.0 to 34.0
Iron (Fe) 2.50 max
Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max
Carbon (C) 0.30 max
Silicon (Si) 0.50 max
Sulphur (S) 0.024 max

Mechanical Properties of Monel 400 Strips

Soft annealed Alloy 400 strip pairs a 480 MPa minimum tensile strength with 35% elongation, so it forms, bends, and draws without cracking. The yield minimum applies to the qualifying gauge, so figures for strips below 0.51 mm are indicative.

Property Value
Tensile Strength, minimum
480 MPa (70 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset), minimum
193 MPa (28 ksi)
Elongation in 50 mm, minimum
35%
Density
8.8 g/cm³

Equivalent Grades of Monel 400 Strips

International buyers can cross-reference the UNS N04400 strip against their regional standard below. The 2.4360 strips we slit match every designation listed, since all name the same nickel-copper alloy.

Country / Standard Designation
USA (UNS) N04400
USA (AMS) AMS 4544
Europe (EN Name) NiCu30Fe
Germany (W.Nr) 2.4360
Japan (JIS) NW4400
United Kingdom (BS) NA 13

Industrial Applications of Monel 400 Strips

These 4 industries take most of the Alloy 400 strips we slit. Buyers select the grade for its resistance to hydrofluoric acid, seawater, and reducing environments, with strength from cryogenic to moderate temperatures.

Monel 400 Strips used in Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Chemical and Petrochemical Processing

Chemical plants use Monel 400 strip for valve and pump components, seals, gaskets, and heat exchanger parts exposed to hydrofluoric and sulphuric acid. The nickel-copper matrix resists reducing acids that corrode stainless steel, extending equipment life.

Monel 400 Strips used in Marine Engineering

Marine Engineering

Marine fabricators specify Alloy 400 strips for hardware in seawater service, sealing parts and pump shaft components. UNS N04400 is a proven material for flowing seawater service, with strong resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Monel 400 Strips used in Oil and Gas

Oil and Gas

Oil and gas operators fit Monel 400 strips into wellhead components, valve trim, and instrument parts in reducing chloride-bearing environments. These Monel strips hold up against sour conditions and brine, and slit strip suits sealing rings and downhole parts.

Monel 400 Strips used in Springs and Bellows

Springs and Bellows

Spring makers choose Monel 400 strips for springs, bellows, and flexible connectors that resist corrosion under repeated flexing. The alloy keeps its ductility at subzero temperatures, so parts stay reliable in cryogenic service. Precision-slit widths feed forming lines cleanly.
